• The passage that we read is
about two builders who built their
house on 2 different foundations
with 2 diff. results.
• In the “Tale of 2 builders”, Jesus
teaches us that the foundation
where we build our house is
important.
• Some elements of this parable
show us why the foundation of
your life matters. Let us study
these elements:

• This is a picture of people
and how they respond
differently to the Gospel
Message (1 Cor. 15:3-4)
• The bible puts it this way:

GOSPEL.

 • People build on same
location. They weather same
storms, work same jobs, do
same things, go to same
church, hear same preaching
and live same kind of lives.
From the outside, the
hearers or people are the
same.
• People pictured in the story
are religious, do the same
ritual/ ceremony in their
beliefs, serve and support the
same church. They are both
responsible, believe on same
things, same kind of lives.
They have a lot of common
on the outside.
 II. Consider the Contrasts
(Pagkakaiba)
•While there are similarities,
there are MAJOR
DIFFERENCES.
•We will now take a look at
those differences.
1. The man who built his
house on the SAND.
• He built his house w/ little
preparation. Sand is
unstable, always changing
and moving. Not a good
place to build, it will never
provide firm foundation.
• This speaks of people who hear
the Gospel, but instead of
believing in Jesus, they believe
they can build on shifting sands
of human philosophy, wisdom,
opinion & religious achievement.
They are driven by outward,
religious appearances and faith
in themselves rather than faith
in Jesus.
2. Characteristics of People
who build on SAND
1. Heard the gospel and
choose to save themselves.
2. They choose to follow God
on their own terms.
3. If God commands them to
do something, they will obey
if they choose to. If they
don’t like it, they won’t do it.
 4. They build house on self-will,
self- fulfillment, self-sufficiency,
self-satisfaction and self-
righteousness.
5. Works based on religion, lacks
will power to save souls. (2 Tim.
3:5)
6. Build on sand because it is
easy. Requires little effort. Little
change here, little change there
and they only fool themselves.

 7. They think they are right with
the Lord.
8. No COMMITMENT. No
SACRIFICE. No FAITH.
9. They believe they can pray a
prayer, sign a card, join a church
and all will be well.
10. They can turn Christianity on
and off like a switch. They are
here today, gone tomorrow and in
again next day.
11. They ultimately have
faith in themselves.
12. When God makes
demands on them and
calls for TOTAL
SURRENDER to His will,
they MAKE EXCUSES.

• People who build their lives on
religion, self-righteousness &
false hope will not serve God.
They will not sacrifice. They
will choose the easy path. They
like instant results, rewards,
satisfaction and pleasure.
• They are shallow people who
love heights, hate depths, they
are hot and then cold. They
are in, then out.
2. The man who built his
house on the ROCK.
• ROCK (bedrock) –
fundamental principles on
which something is based
(foundation, heart, core)
• The builder DUG DEEP until
he reached the bedrock and
build his house.
 • Rock does not move. It is
unchanging and stable. Good
foundation for house.
• They are the people who
heard the GOSPEL and believe
on it to the point they build
their lives on it. The “rock” is
the GOSPEL. Same rock
mentioned in Matt. 16:16-18

2. Characteristic of People
who build on ROCK
1. They understand that JESUS
alone have the power to save
their souls (John 14:6, John
3:16 & Matthew 11:28)
2. They heard about JESUS and
believe it, embrace it and yield
to it. The GOSPEL changed
their lives. (2 Cor. 5:17)

path, do anything the Lord tells
them to do. They know that God
deserves the best.

on faith in the GOSPEL and
JESUS. And one who builds on
shifting sand of religion,
works and self-righteousness.
• This describes the life you are
building right now.

 II. Consider the
CONSEQUENCES (RESULTA)
• Rain came, floods followed and
winds of destruction blew. THIS
IS THE IMAGE OF JUDGEMENT!
• Judgement is INDIVIDUAL.
• One house stood and other was
totally destroyed.
1. Consequences of house built
on SAND.
• It could not face the withering
judgement of God and it collapsed.
• Jesus said, “great was the fall of it..”
(Matthew 7:27)
• There was nothing left of hopes,
dreams, plans, efforts, works or
anything. Everything was destroyed
and swept away as if it never existed.
 • People who trust religion, good
works, some prayer, some
emotional experience, some
profession or anything else will
see the house they built crumble
and fall before the judgement of
God. (John 3:36)
• The person who built their life on
sand will spend eternity in HELL.

 2. Houses built on ROCK
• 1 John 5:12 & John 6:37-40
• It experience the same storm
(same judgement), but it stood
against the storm. It was shaken
but did not fall.
• It stood on firm foundation and it
weathered the storm.
• It stood because it was built on
the Word of God and Gospel of
grace.
• It stood because the builder dug
deeper and built on something
greater than himself, JESUS.
• He built his life on Jesus and he
was accepted by God.

 3. This is how it works
• You can join the church and still
go to hell.
• You can be baptized and still go to
hell.
• You can be a good person in the
eyes of people and still go to hell.
• You can have religion and still go
to hell.
• BUT if you build your life on faith
in JESUS, His death and
reserrection, your house will
stand be SAVED!
• JUDGEMENT is INDIVIDUAL.

RIGHT THING.
• His confidence is not in the
LORD, it is in himself. The
problem is in the foundation.
• The house you build might look
sturdy, materials might be
right, it might be pleasing to
the eye, but it was built on
wrong foundation.
• Beware of anyone who preaches
any Gospel other than the Gospel
of salvation through faith in
Jesus Christ. Beware of anyone
who says salvation is anything
but by grace alone, throught
faith alone, in Christ alone.
