god our foundation

• Who here has worked in construction before?
• In any construction project, the most important aspect is the foundation; a
structure without a strong foundation cannot stand.
• The foundation of a house comprises a strong base, from which you can erect
and fortify whatever you intend to do.
• Similarly, in our Christian life, we need to have a strong connection with God and
His son Jesus Christ.
• What is our foundation? The word of God is our foundation and guide.
• Today, let's explore together two key passages from the Gospels, Luke
6:46-49 and Matthew 7:24-27. Both texts present powerful teachings of
Jesus Christ about the importance of building our lives on a solid
foundation.
• In Luke 6:46-49 (LER O VERSO), Jesus questions why people call Him
Lord but do not do what He says.He compares those who hear and practice
His words to a wise man who builds his house upon the rock, enduring the
storms of life. Meanwhile, those who hear but do not practice are like those
who build upon the sand and see their houses collapse in adversity.
• And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
46

• 47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will
shew you to whom he is like:
• 48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the
foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently
upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
• 49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation
built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently,
and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
• Matthew 7:24-27 (LER O VERSO) essentially echoes the same
message, using slightly different language. Jesus speaks of two
builders: a wise one, who builds upon the rock, and a foolish one, who
builds upon the sand. Again, we see the crucial difference between
hearing and practicing the word of God.
• These passages invite us to a deep reflection on the nature of our faith
and the foundation upon which we build our spiritual lives. Let's now
delve deeper into these texts to extract valuable lessons for our daily
lives.
• Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I
24

will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
• 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and
beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
• 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not,
shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
• 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and
beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
• As we examine Luke 6:46-49 and Matthew 7:24-27, we are confronted with the
powerful image of two types of builders: the wise and the foolish. The wise one
hears Jesus' words and puts them into practice, while the foolish one merely
hears, without acting upon what he has learned.
• The rock mentioned by Jesus represents the steadfastness of faith and
obedience to His word. Building upon this rock means grounding our lives in
eternal and unshakable principles found in the Word of God. It is a conscious
choice to live according to Jesus' teachings, not just in words but also in
actions.
• On the other hand, the sand symbolizes instability and a lack of spiritual
foundation. Those who build upon the sand rely on fleeting and worldly things to
sustain their lives, instead of trusting in the solidity of the rock which is Christ.
• Just as the houses of the two builders faced the storms, so do we face life's
adversities. And it is during these moments that the true nature of our faith is
revealed. Those who built upon the rock stand firm, while those who built upon the
sand suffer a catastrophic fall.

• Brothers and sisters, may we reflect on the foundation upon which we are building
our spiritual lives. Are we building upon the solid rock of faith in Christ, or are we
relying on fragile and volatile foundations?

• As we ponder such verses, we are confronted with the call to obedience that
resonates in both passages. Jesus not only instructs us to hear His words but also
to practice them.
• Obedience is not an option but a concrete demonstration of our faith. It is through
obedience that we show our commitment to Christ and build a solid foundation for
our spiritual lives. When we choose to obey, we are choosing to build upon the
unshakable rock that is Jesus Christ.

• However, obedience is not always easy. We are often tempted to follow our own
path, to seek comfort in the unstable sand rather than trust in the solid rock of
God's word. But as disciples of Christ, we are called to a life of self-denial and
submission to the Father's will.

• Building upon the rock requires commitment and sacrifice. It requires us to

prioritize the Kingdom of God above our own desires and conveniences. It means
choosing obedience even when it costs us something.
• May we respond to the call to obedience with humility and determination. May our
lives be characterized by a constant pursuit to hear and practice the word of God,
thus building a solid foundation to face the storms that will inevitably come. As we
consider the passages of Luke 6:46-49 and Matthew 7:24-27, we are confronted
with the reality of the consequences of our choices. Jesus presents us with two
clear options: to build upon the rock or to build upon the sand. Each choice has
profound implications for our lives.

• Those who build upon the rock, hearing and practicing the words of Jesus, are
likened to a wise man. Their house stands firm even in the face of the fiercest
storms. They experience a peace that surpasses all understanding because their
faith is rooted in the solid rock that is Christ
• On the other hand, those who build upon the sand, hearing but not practicing the words of
Jesus, are likened to a foolish man. Their house collapses under the pressure of the storms,
leaving them exposed and helpless. They discover too late that they relied on an unstable
and temporary foundation.

• These passages remind us that our choices have eternal consequences. Building upon the
rock means enjoying the security and stability that come from a deep and genuine faith in
Christ. Building upon the sand means facing disappointment and despair that come from
trusting in things that cannot sustain our spiritual life.

• May we carefully consider our choices and their consequences. May we choose to build our
lives upon the solid rock of God's word, even if it means forsaking fleeting pleasures and
conveniences of this world.
• As we reflect on Luke and Matthew, we are reminded of Jesus' urgent invitation to
build our lives upon Him, the eternal Rock. This invitation echoes powerfully in
John 14:6, where Jesus says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes
to the Father except through me."

• These words not only affirm the uniqueness of Christ as the sole mediator
between God and men, but also offer us clear direction on where we should build
our lives. He is not just one option among many; He is the only true way that
leads to eternal life.

• Building upon Christ means not only believing in Him but also following His
teachings and shaping our lives according to His will. It means putting our faith in
Him as our Savior and Lord, trusting Him for the salvation of our souls and the
guidance of our lives.
• When we build upon Christ, we are building upon a foundation that never fails. He is the
eternal Rock that stands firm amidst the storms of life. He strengthens us, sustains us, and
guides us, no matter how fierce the adversities we face.

• Dear friends, Jesus' invitation is before us today. He calls us to build our lives upon Him,
the only true way to God. He is the source of abundant and eternal life that everyone longs
for.

• May we respond to this invitation with faith and obedience. May we recognize Jesus as our
only Savior and Lord, building our lives upon Him, the unshakable Rock.

• May He be the center and foundation of all that we are and do. May we live in such a way
that when the storms of life come, we may stand firm, trusting in the promise of our Lord
and Savior, Jesus Christ's constant presence and eternal love.
