LITERATURE DURING THE

AMERICAN PERIOD
When the American colonizers arrived they
brought another ground breaking cultural
milestone.
 At the dawn of the 20th Century, American culture began to established
its firm grip on the Filipino Identity.
 English as the official medium of instruction in the public school
system.
 1901- 600 American teachers arrived in the Philippines and they were
known as “The Thomasites”.
 Philippine Normal College and the University of the Philippines
are the institution they help to cultivate the literature of Americans.
 1927- The UP Writers Club established
 Philippine Magazine and College Folio now became “Philippine
Collegian” allowed Filipino writers to express themselves
creatively in writing the new language.
 1928- The University of Santo Thomas also published their work
in a form of English language through “The Varsitarian”.
 1922- Ateneo de Manila “The Ateneo Monthly”.
 From the 1920’s onwards Philippine literature in English began to
gain momentum the genres of poetry, fiction, drama, and essay
saw remarkable growth.
 Jose Garcia Villa
One of the chief figures of modernism. He was the one who
made a clear statement about innovation, standard of English
grammar and syntax.
Villa also influences the generations of Filipino poets to push
English language to its limits in their works.
