FLORENCE
-short introduction-
Geographically small but culturally
rich, Florence is home to some of
the greatest art and architecture
in the world. You can look
Michelangelo's David in the eyes,
fall under the seductive sway of
Botticelli's Birth of Venus, and
climb the modern world's first
dome, which still dominates the
skyline.

2
After Rome fell, Europe wallowed in centuries of relative
darkness, with little learning, commerce, or travel. Then,
around 1400, there was a Renaissance this was esentially a
rebirth of the culture of ancient Greece and Rome. It started
in Florence, it swept across Europe. Wealthy merchant and
banking families like the Medici, who ruled Florence for
generations, showed their civic pride by commissioning
great art.

Short HISTORY

In 1299 the Florentines decided to build a palace to house the

government organizations of the republic, in addition it should have
been a building representative of the power of the republic and the
people. Arnolfo di Cambio, the architect of the Duomo of Florence and
the church of Santa Croce began this construction on the ruins of the
Palazzo dei Fanti and the Palazzo dell'Esecutore di Giustizia in Piazza
della Signoria.Several generations were needed to complete the work.
Cosimo I de Medici ordered a restructuring and decoration of the
building during the 16th century to turned into his residence. Thus, it
acquires its present appearance and becomes the Ducal Palace where
valuables were kept.
