Mental disorders disproportionately affect young people worldwide and are a major cause of disability and early death for those aged 10-24. Approximately 75% of major mental syndromes emerge by age 24. While presentations may initially be mild, without treatment they can progress to more complex forms requiring specialized care. Building on earlier global conferences, establishing research priorities and initiatives for translating new research are important steps for reforming youth mental health services. A proposed Lancet Psychiatry Commission would focus on identifying modifiable risk and protective factors influencing mental health from childhood through the transition to adulthood, as well as evaluating new models of care for young people.
