Salt Bridge
Salt Bridge

• A tube containing an electrolyte (typically in the

form of a gel), providing electrical contact between

two solutions.

• Salt bridges usually come in two types:

glass tube and filter paper.

Function Of Salt Bridge
A salt bridge (or porous partition) has three functions:

1. The salt bridge allows for the flow of ions and

therefore electrical contact between the two half-cells.

2. The salt bridge prevents mixing of the electrode

solutions.
Function Of Salt Bridge

3. As a result of electrical contact, the salt bridge

maintains the electrical neutrality in each half-cell as
ions flow into and out of the salt bridge preventing the cell from
rapidly running its reaction to equilibrium.
Important To Use a Salt Bridge

The purpose of a salt bridge is not to move electrons

from the electrolyte, rather it's to maintain charge
balance because the electrons are moving from
one-half cell to the other. The electrons flow from the
anode to the cathode.
Absence Of Salt Bridge

If no salt bridge were present, the solution in one half cell would
accumulate negative charge and the solution in the other half
cell would accumulate positive charge as the reaction proceeded,
quickly preventing.
