 A new device that could make the blind people
gain their vision has been developed by
scientists.
 This device is known as vision
device or the Electric lollipop.
 This works in a similar fashion, like tasting a
coffee.
 After a couple of days of practice people, who
otherwise couldn’t see, were able to make out
shapes, read signs and even read letters.
1.camera: camera on the forehead
captures the image of test
symbol.
2.Video output is sent to a
processor.
3.Processor translates the output
from the camera into a pattern
of electronic pulses that are sent
to an array of electrodes held
against the tongue.
4. Array of electrodes a little over an
inch square stimulate receptor
cells on the surface of the tongue
to the brain.
1.Electrode array:
The lollipop contains a square
grid of 400 electrodes to how
much light is in that area of
picture.
2.Stimulation circuitary:
A programming device
comprising a user interface
and a processor that present
a user with a interface for
selection of one of a constant
current mode or a constant
voltage mode.
3.Accelerometer:
The other side of the electrode array is an
accelorometer . Sensitive nerve fibers on
the tongue respond to electrodes to
enable a rapid transfer of electrical
information.
sunglasses and camera:The device is
made of a video camera hidden in a pair
of sunglasses . Signals from the camera
are sent along a cable to a handheld
control unit, about a size of a cell phone.
CPU, Battery:This unit houses such
features as zoom control, light setting and
shock intensity levels as well as a CPU
which converts digital signal into electrical
pulse replacing the function of retina.
1.Camera to CPU:
Camera captures the images and sends them to
the CPU.
2.CPU to tongue:
CPU converts the images into a pattern of
electronic impulses and sends them to the
electrode array placed a top the tongue.
3.Tongue to brain:
These impulses are then sent to the sensory
cortex of the brain.
 From the CPU the signals are
sent to the tongue via an
electrode array, about nine
square centimeters in size, that
is placed a top the tongue.
 densely packed nerves at the
tongue surface receive the
incoming electrical signals, which
feel a little like pop rocks or
champagne bubbles to the user
 In any case with in 15 minutes
of using the device, blind people
can begin interpreting spatial
information via the brainport.
 Placing the device on the
tongue inside the mouth frees
the hands to interact with
environment , plus the device
can be hidden in the mouth.
 The key to the device may be
its utilization of the tongue
,which seems to be an ideal
organ for sensing the electrical
current .saliva there functions
as s good conductor.
 It is the ideal place to provide
information through tactile
stimulation.
ADVANTAGES
 The device does not replace
the sense of sight ,it adds to
other sensory experience to
give users information about
size, shape and location of
object.
 It uses a rechargeable battery
like in normal cell phones.
 Users can operate it
independently with a hand-
held controller
DISADVANTAGES
 Occasionally it will produce weak metallic
taste sensations, a minor side effect. It would
be better with gold coated electrode.
 It requires training the brain incrementally
using daily practice sessions.
 When it comes to market its cost is more so
it cannot be afforded by every one.
CONCLUSION
There is a hope that a balance device
that use nerve fibers on the tongue to
transmit information about head and body
position to brain can make a serious
difference for patients whose sight cannot
be replaces .
Thus we hope the blind people can
also see this colorful world by using
“BRAINPORT DEVICE”
