Army finance officer found dead in office

CAMP EVANGELISTA, Patag, Cagayan de Oro City: The finance officer of the Philippine
Army’s 58th Infantry Battalion (IB) was found dead with a gunshot wound in his office on
Wednesday morning.
Technical Sgt. Rogelio Asuncion died from a lone gunshot wound in his chest in his office
at the 4th Infantry Division camp here.
Dr. Christian Caballes, of the Scene of the Crime Office (SOCO) in Camp Alagar in Lapasan,
Cagayan de Oro City, conducted an investigation of the death of Asuncion.
There was no immediate statement from the Army and the SOCO about the cause of the
death although “accidental firing” or “suicide” was not ruled out.
Asuncion’s issued firearm, a Glock 35, was found at the scene and was submitted
for ballistic examination.
Lt. Col. Roy Derilo, commander of the Philippine Army’s 58th IB, visited the office of
Asuncion after being informed of the latter’s death.
Asuncion was the liaison and finance officer of the Army’s 400-strong 58th IB
based in Claveria, Misamis Oriental.
As the finance officer, he is responsible for preparing the 58th IB’s salaries, allowances
and other financial requirements of the battalion’s operations.
Asuncion’s body was immediately brought to the Army station hospital in Camp
Evangelista after the SOCO’s investigation of incident.
Asuncion was declared dead by doctors at the station hospital.
The body lies at the Philippine Army’s chapel in Camp Evangelista.
