Man fresh out of prison jumps off FastCat

A man fresh out of prison went missing after jumping off from FastCat around 8:20 A.M. on February 21
in the seawaters of Capul, Northern Samar.

The victim was identified as Niño Nono Chavez, 33, a resident of Purok 3, Brgy. 6, Catbalogan City.

Accordingly, Allen Municipal Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Police Lt. Alexis Thom Manlangit
received a call from Capul MPS OIC Police Captain Glecerio L. Timan to inform of a passenger who
jumped off from the FastCat.

Initial investigation disclosed that the victim was aboard FastCat from Capul heading for Allen when he
suddenly jumped off the marine transport vessel. The FastCat crew immediately conducted search and
rescue operation (SARO), broadcast the incident, and called the Philippine Coast Guard. However,
despite the efforts, they failed to locate and recover the victim, thereby calling off the SARO.

Further investigation revealed that the victim was aboard the Philtranco Bus. The bus driver believed the
victim was suffering from depression. He also said the victim was just discharged from prison based on
the Certificate of Release from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) which the victim
gave to him.
