New Bridge Construction Project Over Kelani
River.
• Sri Lanka’s first suspension bridge project.
• Accommodates 6 lane traffic with 380m length having 180m main
span and two 100m side spans.
• Constructed by SMCC-SANKEN JV, a joint venture between Sumitomo
Mitsui Construction Ltd. and Sanken Construction Ltd.
• Funds through a loan facility from Japan amounting to Yen 35,020
million.
• The construction will commence in early 2017 and is scheduled to
complete by end of 2020.

• With the opening of Colombo-Katunayake Expressway in October
2013, there is a considerable increase in the traffic entering the
Colombo city and the capacity of existing New Kelani Bridge will not
be sufficient to cater to such heavy traffic volume.
• This Project is the largest bridge construction project in Sri Lanka and
a symbol of Greater Colombo region.
• Major developments in Colombo city and Colombo Port will further
increase the traffic in this area. Therefore, Road Development
Authority has decided to implement a project to construct a new
bridge adjoining the existing bridge with six lanes together with
related elevated approach bridges and interchanges.

• Project providing connectivity between Malambe and Colombo Fort,
• 15.8 km length.
• 16 stations and a depot.
• Financial and technical assistance of Japan International Corporation
Agency (JICA), $ 1.85 billion .
(The light rail network is estimated to cost $ 6 billion.)

• Facilitating minimum traffic congestion, reduced travel time, low
passage cost, environmental sustainability (improved air quality ), safe
travel and economic development.
• Connect some of the highly commercialized areas including Borella,
Rajagiriya , Battaramulla and forgetting the heart of health care for Sri
Lankans, the Colombo General Hospital with a station at Townhall.
