What is Ecosystem?
Ecosystems are composed of living animals, plants
and non living structures that exist together and
‘interact’ with each other.
Ecosystems can be very small (the area around a
boulder), they can be medium sized (the area around
a coral reef) or they can be very large (the Irish Sea
or even the eastern Atlantic).
Fish in the Marine Ecosystem
Fish do not live in isolation-they are part of the Marine
Ecosystem and they interact closely with their physical,
chemical and biological environment.
The effect of Fishing on the
Ecosystem
Fishing activity does not only impact on the fish stocks
themselves but also the Ecosystem within which the fish
live in. There are both, direct and indirect effects of
Fishing on the Ecosystem. Direct effects of Fishing
include catching and or discarding of other animals and
damaging the seabed with fishing gear. The effect of
Fishing on the Ecosystem can also be indirect, for example
by removing fish from the Marine food web.
There are essentially two kinds of ecosystem: Aquatic and
Terrestrial. Any other sub-ecosystem falls under one of these
two headings.
A.Terrestrial Ecosystem
Can be found anywhere apart from heavily saturated places.
1. Forest Ecosystem
They are the ecosystems in which an abundance of flora, or
plants, is seen so they have a big number of organisms which
live in relatively small space.
√ Tropical Evergreen Forest-These are tropical forests that
receive a mean rainfall of 80 for every 400 inches annually.
The forests are characterised by dense vegetation which
comprises tall trees at different heights.
√ Temperate Evergreen Forest-Those have quite
a few number of trees as mosses and ferns make
up for them. Trees have developed spiked leaves
in order to minimize transpiration.
2. Dessert Ecosystem
Desert ecosystems are located in regions that
receive an annual rainfall less than 25. They occupy
about 17 percent of all the land on our planet. Due to
the extremely high temperature, low water
availability and intense sunlight, fauna and flora are
scarce and poorly developed.
3. Grassland Ecosystem
Grasslands are located in both the tropical and
temperate regions of the world though the ecosystems
vary slightly.
