Drives & back-drives presentation - Introduction

Introduction to drives and back-drives

• Function of drives & back-drives: to connect strongly the
turnout with point machine
− To move switch-blades when the point machine is throwing
− To maintain the heel of 1/9 switch-blades in position when
point machine in final position
• The use of back-drive depends of the switch-blade length:
− For short switch-blade (1/7): no back-drive
− For longer switch-blade (1/9): one back-drive required (main
line)
• If disconnected, rods are length adjustable (half turn 
1,75 mm)

Drives & back-drives for main line turnout – 1/7 (1/3)

• Switch-blades 1/7 are short type: no back-drive
• Drives only consist of the drive bar, connecting directly to the
MJ point machine to the VCC connecting rog

Drives & back-drives for main line turnout – 1/7 (3/3)

• To avoid electrical risk on the track-circuit, insulating elements
have been installed between two potential electric parts
− Insulating 16 mm axle between the VCC connecting rod
and the drive bar,
− 24 mm axle with greaser between the drive bar and the
point machine.
• Rods have been specially designed to reduce the bending of
the drive bar and to avoid vertical stress on arms of the VCC
“C locking arm”
• The drive bar is the same for right hand and left hand point
machine installation, but the VCC connecting rod is specific

Drives & back-drives for main line turnout – 1/9 type
(1/3)
• 1/9 turnout switch-blades are long type
− Switch blades are too flexible to be moved by only one
drive
− Back-drives are needed to ensure the right throwing of the
switch-blades heel
• The drive bar presents a complementary connection for back-
drive motion

Drives & back-drives for main line turnout – 1/9 type
(3/3)
• Back-drives are composed of:
− (1x) adjustable rod between VCC and 1st counter gear,
− (1x) 1st counter gear,
− (1x) long rod,
− (1x) guide for long rod (to avoid any buckling of the rod),
− (1x) 2nd counter gear,
− (1x) rod for 2nd drive,
− (1x) driven stretcher bar.

Drives & back-drives for main line turnout – 1/9 type
(1/3)
• Switch-blades toe are moved and retained by VCC. Switch-
blades heel are moved and retained by MJ.
• Back-drives absolutely need to be adjusted  Ensure the heel
switch-blades position: Less than 1 mm gap between closed
switch-blade and stock-rail. The flange way value is the
consequence of the point machine stroke and the counter
gear ratio.

Drives & back-drives for main line turnout – 1/9 type
(2/3)
• Switch blade motion is not regular:
− During VCC unlocking stroke, switch blades toe stay
immobile but heels begin to move
− During VCC translation, the toe motion is faster than the
heel motion
− During VCC locking stroke, the toe has finished its
translation and the heel is still moving

(3/4)
• Except for following rods, all drives & back-drives
elements are the same for right and left hand
installation:
− The drive bar (because of complementary connecting
hole),
− The VCC connecting rod and the driven stretcher bar
(because of their bending).
• Reduction ratio of counter-gears:
− Length of 1st counter gear arms is 300x150,
− Length of 2nd counter gear arms is 300x150,
Total ratio is 0,25.
