PROPERTIES OF INTEGERS

DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY
If a, b and c are real numbers,
then ( a + b)c = ac + bc,
and c(a + b) = ca +cb
 Example:

7 (10 + 3) = 7 (10) + 7 (3)

= 70 + 21
= 91
Identity Property for Addition
If a is a real number, then a + 0 = 0 + a = a
Zero (0) is the additive identity element

 example:
6+0=6
0 + ( -7) = -7
Identity Property for Multiplication
If a is a real number then (a)(1)=(1)(a) =a
One (1) is the multiplicative identity
element.

Example:
5x1=5
- 10 x 1 = -10
Inverse property for Addition
If a is a real number; then there exist
another real number (-a), such that a + (-a)
= (-a) + a = 0
a and (-a) are additive inverses of each
other.
Inverse property for Multiplication
if a is a nonzero real number, then there
exists another real number, such that a . 1/
=1

a and 1/a are multiplicative inverses of

each other.
Property of zero for Multiplication
if a any real number, then (a)(0) =
(0)(a) = 0.
( 6)(41) – (6)(11)
= 6 (41-11)
= 6(30)
=180
9(108) = 9( 100 +8)
= 9 x100 + 9 x 8
= 900 + 72
= 972
