Sizing Solar PV

Systems
Determining Power Consumption
Demands
Electrical appliance usage
• Appliances Hours per day watts
Flourescent lamp 4hours 45watts
Fan 2hours 60watts
Refrigerator 24hours 325watts
TV 6 hours 170watts
Wh per day Formula
Wh per day = Power of appliances x no. of hours used + ……… x
1.3
Ex. (45w x 4 hours)+(60w x 2 hours)+(325w x 24 hours)+(170w x 6
hours) =9120 wh

9120wh x 1.3 (energy loss) = 11856 wh/day

Sizing PV Modules
Formula:
PV Modules size = Whper day / 3.43
watt peak pv modules
PV Modules size = 11856 wh/day / 3.43
= 3456.6/100
= 34.566 or 35 modules
Battery Sizing
• Formula :
Battery Sizing = Wh per day x Days of Autonomy
battery loss x depth of discharge x nominal battery voltage

Constant value: batt loss = 0.85

Depth of discharge = 0.6
Nominal batt voltage = 12v
Battery Sizing sample
computation
Given: 11856 wh per day
Days of autonomy: 3 days
Nominal battery voltage: 12v
Solution: Battery sizing = 1856 x 3
0.85 x 0.6 x 12
= 5811.764 Ah
Charge Controller Sizing
_take the number of panels x watts = total watts of solar array
Ex. 35 x 100 watts (series) = 3500watts
_ divide by the voltage of battery
Ex. 3500 watts / 12v = 291.67 A
Or 300Amperes
