O Role play the introduction exercise with a
friend
Friendship
O A real friend is someone you know well,
spend time with and tell secrets to. Learn to
treasure such friends.
O What do you like about them? Character?
Ability? Behaviour?
O Discuss in groups the qualities you’d expect
in a good friend.
Some Rules to keep Friends
O Be Polite
Don’t whisper to only one person when you are
with friends. It makes the rest feel
uncomfortable, left out and even hurt.
If you have something special to tell one of
your friends, wait till you are alone with her.
O Be tactful
Do not criticise your friends in front of others.
O Be kind
Be kind to everyone. Be a friend to all no
matter what their race, language, religion or
age. Bo not be bossy or boastful.
O Be honest
Do not lie to your friends or pretend you are
somebody whom you are not.
O Give praise
Compliment your friends on the good things
they have done.
O Keep secrets
Do not tell your friends’ secrets to others. This
can hurt your friends feelings.

betrayed by a friend?
O Share with your group your feelings and how
you coped with the situation.
Manners at Home
O Be courteous
What are some ways you can be courteous at
home?
(Raise your hands if you know the answer.)
Be courteous at home
O Talk respectfully to the elders in your family.
O Remember to thank them for the things they
have done for you.
O Learn to talk freely with your family
members about your interests, joy, sadness,
etc.
O If a member of your family has his/her door
closed, knock before you enter.
O Never read or open others’ letters or diaries
without permission.
Be considerate at home
O Always inform your parents or other
members of your family where you are going.
O Always try to keep the noise down in
whatever you do, eg. Games, music, etc.
O When your parents, elder brothers or sisters
have friends over, try not to interfere with
what they are doing.
O Never listen in on other people’s phone
conversation.
O Never take things that are not yours without
permission.
With friends at home
O If you invite friends to your home, plan
ahead to make them feel welcome.
O When they arrive,
- Greet them warmly
- Introduce them to your family
- Offer your friends a drink or something
special
- You may show your friends around your
house but do not take them to your parents’,
brothers’ or sisters’ room without
permission.
Manners at the table
O When you are having a meal with your
friends or family, remember your table
manners.
O Give one reason why you should not do the
following:
- Talk with your mouth full.
- Reach for food across the table.
- Eat only your favourite food.
- Search the dish for choice pieces.
- Eat food and sip soup noisily.
Drama Time
O Talk with your groups about what you do, or
do not do at home.
O Dramatise a scene of your choice.
O Your mini-skit should teach us something
about manners and courtesy.
