Functions of Material Handling

There are two main functions:

• To choose production machinery and assist in
layout so as to eliminate as far as need of
material handling
• To choose most appropriate material handling
equipment which is safe and can fulfill
material requirements at the possible
minimum overall cost

ProGlove
• Established in December, 2014
• Combination of Scanner and glove
• Worker needed handle the scanner each time
• Saves around 4 seconds per scan

Other functions of Material Handling
• Minimize the movement involved in
production operation

• Minimize the distances moved by adopting
shortest routes

• Employ mechanical aid in place of manual
labor (conveyor, pulley, lever, etc.)
• Change the sequence of production
operations in order to minimize backtracking
and duplicate handling

• Design containers, packages, drums, etc. to
economize handling and to reduce damage to
the materials in transit

• Material handling equipments should
periodically be resorted to check ups, repairs
and maintenance

•PRINCIPLES OF MATERIAL
HANDLING
1.Planning principle:
• All material handling should be plan
such that proposed methods are
completely defined at the outset.
2. Systems principle:
• Plan a system integrating the handling
activities and coordinating the full
scope of operations.

3. Space utilisation principle:
• Make optimum use of cubic space.

4. Unit load principle:

• Increase quantity, size, weight of load
handled.

5. Gravity principle:
• Utilize gravity to move a material
wherever practicable.

6. Material flow principle:
• Plan an operation sequence and
equipment arrangement to optimise
material flow.

7. Simplification principle:
• Eliminate unnecessary movement
and/or equipment.
8. Safety principle:
• Provide for safe handling methods and
equipment.

9. Standardisation principle:
• Material handling methods,
equipment, controls and software
should be standardized within the
limits of achieving overall performance
objectives

10. Flexibility principle:

• Select equipment which is capable of
handling variety of tasks.

11. Motion principle:
• Equipment designed to transport
material should be kept in motion.

12. Idle time principle:

• Reduce unproductive time or idle time.

13. Maintenance principle:

• Plan for preventive maintenance or
scheduled repair of all handling
equipment.
