School, Kalyani Nagar Field Trip to a Recycling Plant ● Seeing things in action helps us understand the processes involved, and their importance. ● A field trip to a recycling plant will help students understand the benefits and importance of recycling, thereby, making them more inclined towards this process. ● It is the school’s duty to inform its students about all of this, to ensure the growth of brighter and greener students. Have an Environment Club ● Every school must have an Environment Club, which focuses on activities related to this field. ● The Club can come up with ideas for various events, such as a tree plantation drive, an environment fest, a newspaper collection drive, and plan these regularly. ● They can also have a monthly news edition, which talks about the earth’s condition, and what steps have been taken recently to protect it. Have our own Garden in School ● To promote a feeling of love for our environment, schools can also have an in-house garden, maintained by the students. ● Apart from developing life skills, the fruits and vegetables grown will also provide safe and healthy food for the students. ● Gardens are a great way to battle depression, and will also instill a feeling of responsibility among the students. Spread awareness about Carpooling ● Although most schools do have a public transportation system of their own, it is often not enough to accommodate all students, or the ones who have to stay back for extra-curricular activities. ● Schools should encourage carpooling among their students, thus cutting down on heavy emissions from a number of vehicles. ● Apart from this, carpooling is also a great way to save time, fuel, and make friends. Rain Water Harvesting ● Collect rain water on the terrace and open area of the school building ● Connect a pipe from the collection area to the under ground water tank ● Filter the water before it is passed to the water tank for storage Benefits - ● Water for utility purpose and gardening ● Reduces municipal water consumption ● Savings on water bills Reuse ● Use Reusable cups, plates, spoons in the tuck shop ● These can be washed and reused, thereby reducing the use of plastic/paper Benefits of using Reusable utensils: ● Reduces cost of purchasing disposable ware ● Reduces trash ● Environment friendly Make students Green in Spirit ● Don’t use aluminium or plastic wraps for food in tiffins ● Encourage parents to get their own bags when coming to purchase books ● Have separate trash cans to segregate wet and dry waste ● Fix leaks in bathroom taps and commodes ● Fix aerators in taps to control flow of water and reduce waste Install a Solar Power system ● The School Management can install rooftop solar power generation unit. Electricity generated by the set up can be used for lighting different areas of school. ● It will promote the use of renewable sources of energy, and hence, a clean environment. ● The typical warranty of solar panels is 25 years. ● They require low maintenance. ● Initial cost is high but savings are generated by reduction in electricity consumption over its service life. Conduct an Energy Audit ● Conduct audit for electricity consumption. Switch bulbs to energy-efficient compact fluorescent (CFLs) or LED bulbs. ● Apply Motion Sensors in areas where light is needed only when in use e.g. washrooms. ● Though CFL/LED may be a little more expensive, it’s worth it because they can last up to five times longer than regular light bulbs and are very bright so you won’t need to turn on as many lights. Motion sensors will save electricity. Adopt Classroom Plants ● Each classroom adopts 4 plants in 4 corners or 2 plants at the entrance/door of classroom. The plants chosen can be the ones that improve air quality, like spider plant or peace lily or money plant or Chinese evergreen or snake plant.
● Since the above VOCs (Volatile
organic compounds) and gases are often present in our homes, schools and offices, using indoor plants that remove these from the air can have a significant positive impact on our health and improves air quality.
