Judgment

“the mental act by which we perceive the agreement or disagreement

between two ideas, and also as the mental act by which something is
asserted or denied”

- St. Thomas
Critical Judgment
• Often misinterpreted
- critical (to say negative things)
- academic (critique: to evaluate)

• Investigating and making decisions for things and ideas depending on

how valuable they are.

• Could possibly be not the only “right” answer. But may be supported
by evidences in line with the respective discipline/subject area.
Automatic Judgment
• Governed by heuristics
- simple, efficient rules which people often use to form
judgments and make decisions
• Could lead to “cognitive biases”
- deviations from logic, probability, or rationality
• Rapid, could be delivered without full information and can be
accurate with more complicated procedures of decisions of the same
person.
Impaired Judgment
• Cannot distinguish what to “agree or to
disagree”
• Impaired social skills
• A possible cause for implementing
- a higher level of care
- more restrictive setting (inpatient
hospitalization)
• Alzheimer’s disease, Bipolar disorder,
Schizophrenia
