WHAT IS AN ART?
• important means of expression.
• communicate views, ideas and feelings through skills and imagination.
• springs out of the present-day events and passions of the society.
• integration of different disciplines.
• combination of mixed styles, materials, techniques and concepts.

REALISM …
-- the subject is done the way it actually looks.
EXAMPLE: Painting of Araceli Dans.
DISTORTION …
-- the artists uses his o her imagination and alters the subject according to his or
her desire.
EXAMPLE: Norma Belleza’s Painting.

ABSTRACTION …
-- the artists breaks apart a subject and rearranges it in a different manner.
-- in science, it is the process of analysis and synthesis.
-- Pablo Picasso innovated the style in early 1900’s.
-- The paintings of National Artist Vicente Manansala belong to this category.

NON OBJECTIVISM …
-- there is totally no subject at all – just an interplay of pure elements like line,
shape, color and details.

SPACE …
-- in visual arts it is defined as void, which van be either positive or negative.
-- the positive space refers to a space enclosed in a shape, while the negative
space denotes the opposite.
-- moreover, space can be referred to as an interval or pause.

LINE …
-- extension of a point, a short or long mark drawn or carved on a surface.
It is an implied path suggesting :
a. direction: vertical, horizontal, diagonal.
b. character: jagged, curved, series of dots o broken lines.

SHAPE VS. FORM …
-- two-dimensional -- three-dimensional
-- figure separate from its surrounding -- enclosed line
-- square -- cube
-- circle -- sphere

COLOR …
-- the most striking art element.
-- sensation created by visible wavelengths of light caught in a prism.
-- mixture of organic or synthetic substances called pigments, used as a paint or dye.
-- creates mood or tone such as red for passion, anger, or love, blue for peace, nobility
or sadness, yellow for gaiety, innocence and jealousy.
-- it also varies from dull to light, depending to its intensity.

VALUE …
-- degree of lightness and darkness of a color.
-- suggests an atmosphere or mood
EXAMPLE:
Strong contrast suggests a strong emotional response.

TEXTURE …
-- surface of an artwork.
-- it can be actual or textile, meaning it can be really touch or it can be simulated or
illusory, which means it can only be seen not felt.

These elements are the basic tools of expression in any art form. Artists use, arrange
and manipulate them to express feelings or mood and to convey their message to the
viewers, listeners, or readers.
