IMPLICIT CLAIMS IN A
TEXT
Lesson outcome:

• At the end if the lesson ,the students should be


able to:
• Understand different kinds of claims.
• Formulate different kinds of claims.
• Extract implicitly stated claims from a written text.
CLAIMS DEFINITION

A claims is a statement that is not considered


accepted by all .A claim may be unverified or
controversial to certain a degree.It is usually related
to one side an issue .If so ,the claim is also called a
position.
Three kinds of Claims:

Claims are generally divided into three.


1 .Claims of Fact
2.Claims if Value
3.Claims if Policy
Claims of Fact

- claims of facts relate to the statement that can be verified


,no matter how difficult .They are not repent merely on a
person's preference ,but can be true or false.Facts that are
universally accepted are not considered claims if facts because
there is no more disagreement about what is or what is not
.They say that the certain condition exists.
Example:
• Santa Claus is real
• Cancer is not contagious
• The Earth is warming rapidly.
• The atmosphere has too much carbon dioxide
Claims of a value
- claims if value are evaluative statements .They are statement about
which us better ,more important ,more disirable ,more needed ,or more
useful .They may also relate to what's good or bad .
Example:
• It's more fun in the Philippine (official tourism catch phrase).
• This is very good school.
• It is more advantageous for a Filipino child grow up speaking Filipino
instead of English.
• It is better to be feared than love (Machiavelli)
• Buying and fixing a house is better than building a new one .
• It I'd better to have loved and lost than not to have loved at all
(Tennyson.
Claims of Policy
-claims if policy are all about what should be .They say that a
particular situation should arise.They prescribe a particular
course of action that would lead to a condition .They are usually
made in relation to solving societal problems .They talk about .
Example:
• The death penalty must be rivived.
• A national ID system should be adopted.
• Beauty contests should be brained
• The government must devote more funds to building schools
that building roads.

Identify whether the following are claims of facts,value ,or policy by writing CF for claim of fact,CV for claim of
value,and CP for claim of policy on blank before claim.

________15.Sweden is a peaceful country.
