What Is The Baboon/Papio?
Baboons are primates that make up the genus Papio. The common names of the five species of
baboons are hamadryas, Guinea, chacma, anubis and yellow. Baboons have existed for at least
two million years.

In general, baboons record lengths of 60 to

86 centimeters and weights of 22 to 37 kilos.

It depends on the species, of course, and

the male tends to be older.

Characteristics Of Baboons

Baboons is one of the largest species of monkeys and it is very common to see them in African
landscapes. They are very social animals that live in large and active groups called troops that
can contain up to 100 members.
They can weigh between 40 and 45 kilograms.

Their hands have two opposite thumbs which undoubtedly gives them better maneuverability.
His face is generally thin, standing out especially for his jaw.

The tail of these animals is arched and long but unlike other
monkeys, it does not use this
Habitat Of Baboons

Africa and Arabia are the regions where baboons are distributed in various habitats.

They like semi-arid habitats, especially savannas, but adapt with relative ease to other
environments including tropical forests. What they do require are sources of water and trees or
rocks to shelter and sleep.
Alimentation Of Baboons

They can consume any food available in their habitat. Vegetable species predominate in their
diet. Such as herbs, seeds, fruits, roots, barks, flowers, etc. They also eat fish, birds, rodents and
small green monkeys and antelopes.
They have a fondness for browsing crops and eating them, so in some regions they are considered
a pest.
Threats of baboon

The Guinea papion is the only species “Near Threatened” according to the Red List of the
International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the other species are listed in “Minor
Concern”.

They are abundant and widely spread monkeys, however, they are vulnerable to natural
predators such as cheetahs and leopards, as well as to humans that hunt them when they
affect their crops.
