nowadays the religious component is
usually secondary to the general spirit of
celebration.

• Is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment


• During the Spanish colonial period, it was popularly
known as Carillo.
• Uses flat articulated cut-out figures (shadow puppets).

• Is a colorful theatrical tradition in the Philippines.


• The plot generally revolves around the social, political and
religious conflicts of Muslim and Christian heroes.
• It is dramatized in colorful romantic and stylized acting, and in
glamorous/outlandish costumes.
• Usually ending with the victory of the Christian and conversion of
Muslims to Christianity.

• Senakulo is a dramatic performance to commemorate the


passion and death of Jesus Christ.

• Senakulo has long been a part of the traditional practices


being done by Filipinos during the Holy Week.
