OVERVIEW

 THE NATIONAL INTEGRATED FISHERIES TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT CENTER IS LOCATED IN A 24-


HECTARE COASTAL AREA ALONG THE LINGAYEN GULF IN DAGUPAN CITY, PANGASINAN,
PHILIPPINES.
 THE FACILITY WAS BUILT BY JICA JAPAN AS A RESEARCH CENTER FOR OYSTERS IN FEBRUARY 1985.
THE FACILITY WAS TURNED-OVER TO BFAR IN MAY 1997.
 THE NIFTDC TRANSFORMED INTO A PRIME RESEARCH FOR DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING CENTER
ON AQUACULTURE FOCUSED ON FISH BREEDING, PROPAGATION OF SHELLFISHES AND
CRUSTACEANS, AND VALUE ADDING (FOOD PROCESSING) TECHNOLOGIES.
 THE CENTER IS LOCATED IN BONUAN BINLOC, DAGUPAN CITY, ABOUT 250 KM NORTH OF MANILA.
HISTORY

 ESTABLISHED IN FEBRUARY 1985 AND WAS ORIGINALLY NAMED AS SEAFARMING RESEARCH


AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER (SRDC).
 THE CENTER WAS ONE OF THE PROJECTS UNDER NOW DEFUNCT PHILIPPINE HUMAN
RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT CENTER (PHRDC). ITS MAIN THRUST WAS TO UPGRADE AND
PROMOTE PHILIPPINE OYSTER INDUSTRY.
 WAS CREATED AS PART OF THE COUNTRY’S PARTICIPATION IN THE ASEAN HUMAN RESOURCES
DEVELOPMENT PROJECT IN COOPERATION WITH THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT THROUGH
JAPAN INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AGENCY (JICA).
 THE CENTER WAS MANAGED BY THE MINISTRY OF HUMAN SETTLEMENTS. IN 1987, IT WAS
BECAME ONE OF THE ATTACHED AGENCIES UNDER THE PRESIDENTIAL MANAGEMENT STAFF
(PMS), BECOMING PART OF THE CLUSTER OF AGENCIES DEALING WITH LIVELIHOOD
GENERATION.
 THE BILATERAL AGREEMENT LASTED UNTIL APRIL 1991 (PHASE 1) AND WAS EXTENTED (PHASE
2) UNTIL ITS TERMINATION IN SEPTEMBER 1996. UNDER PHASE 2 , THE CENTER WAS TASKED TO
IMPLEMENT OR PILOT FISHERY PROJECTS FOR TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND DEMONSTRATE
VIABILITY AND FEASIBILITY OF FISHERY-RELATED ENTERPRISES FOR LIVELIHOOD GENERATION.
 WITH THE TERMINATION OF THE TECHNICAL COOPERATION WITH JICA, THE PMS TURNED
OVER THE CENTER TO BFAR IN MAY 1997.
FUNCTIONS

 PROVIDE DEVELOPMENT SERVICES TO THE FISHERY INDUSTRY


 SERVE AS HATCHERY RESEARCH CENTER FOR MARINE AND SELECTED FRESHWATER FISH
SPECIES OF HIGH ECONOMIC VALUE
 SERVE AS SEEDBANK FOR FISH NATURAL FOOD REQUIRED BY GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATE
FISH HATCHERIES
 CONDUCT TECHNOLOGY VERIFICATION STUDIES AT THE CENTER AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR
 PROVIDE TECHNICAL AND LABORATORY SERVICES ON FISH HEALTH, WATER QUALITY AND
MICROBIOLOGY
 ESTABLISH, MAINTAIN AND MANAGE PILOT AND DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS
 CONDUCT TRAININGS AND PROVIDE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE OR ADVISORY SERVICES TO
GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATE FISHERY INSTITUITIONS, FISHFOLKS AND STUDENTS
 COORDINATE WITH NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL AGENCIES. FARMC AND LGU ON FISHERY
DEVELOPMENT
 PERFORM OTHER FUNCTIONS AS MAY BE ASSIGNED BY THE BFAR DIRECTOR OR THE DA
SECRETARY

 FINFISH HATCHERY. FULLY EQUIPPED WITH MODERN WATER/AIR SUPPLY AND FILTRATION SYSTEMS, CANVAS
AND CONCRETE TANKS (10-40 TONS CAPACITY); DIVIDED INTO VARIOUS SECTIONS: BROODSTOCK, NATURAL
FOOD, LARVAL REARING AND LABORATORIES INCLUDING A PHYCOLOGY LABORATORY.

VERA AND MA’AM LORELY ALMONTE.

 LABORATORY SERVICES: HYDROLOGICAL ANALYSIS – TEMPERATURE, SALINITY, DISSOLVED
OXYGEN, PH, SUSPENDED SOLIDS, CHLOROPHYLL-A, AND NUTRIENTS SUCH AS AMMONIA,
NITRATE, PHOSPHATE.

 WATER QUALITY MONITORING:


TEMPERATURE- THE DEGREE OF HOTNESS AND COLDNESS OF A SUBSTANCE.
- FISH GROWS FASTER AT HUGH TEMPERATURE BUT WITHIN OPTIMUM
REQUIREMENTS, WHICH VARIES ACCORDING TO SPECIES.
PH- THIS INDICATES THE HYDROGEN ION CONCENTRATION WHICH DETERMINES THE
ACIDITY OR ALKALINITY OF WATER. THE PH HAS THE FOLLOWING EFFECTS ON FISH:

• DETERMINATION OF SOIL ANALYSIS: THIS METHOD IS BASED ON REMOVING SOIL MOISTURE
BY OVEN-DRYING A SOIL SAMPLE UNTIL THE WEIGHT REMAINS CONSTANT. THE MOISTURE
CONTENT (%) IS CALCULATED FROM THE SAMPLE WEIGHT BEFORE AND AFTER DRYING.
