COMPANY HISTORY
COMPANY HISTORY
COMPANY PROFILE
• The company began in 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR)
and was renamed "International Business Machines" in 1924.

• IBM manufactures and markets computer hardware, middleware and software, and
provides hosting and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to
nanotechnology.

• The first IBM computer, commonly known as IBM PC was introduced on August 12,
1981.

• Owned by Warren Buffett, with a net worth of $170.90 Billion.

• CTR was formed on 16 June 1911, New York City, New York, United States, and
later renamed to IBM in 1924.
COMPANY PROFILE
• Initially, the company manufactured machines. This might look simple but they were
quite high tech machine for that period of time. eg coffee grinders, meat slicers etc.

• During 1950's the company was in an era of rapid technological advances. The firm
moved forward by producing magnetic tape storage, programming, disk drives and
electronic computers.

• In 1960s the most important product was produced by the company until that point of
time. it was the IBM SYSTEM/360 that completely relied on Solid Logic Technology.

• They entered the printer market and today they offer Technologically advanced
computer programs for people from all walks of life. ex. lenovo thinkpad.
WATSON
• An Artificial Intelligent system capable of answering questions posed in natural
language and to help the humans in making a decision considering a broader
perspective.

• Developed in IBM’s DeepQA (QA = Question & Answering) project, led by David
Ferrucci.

• Combines natural language processing, machine learning &

hypothesis generation & evaluation to give direct, confidence
based response.

• Can Extract Needle in the Haystack.

• Plays With natural language

(implicit + highly contextual + ambiguous + often imprecise).
WATSON-TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THE MASTERPIECE
• Processing speed doubles every 18-24 minutes.
• Watson LEARNS and gets SMARTER. It self - accesses its own algorithms.
• Learns to disambiguate between languages, basically words.
• Performance: 80 teraflops per second.
• Given: Rich Natural Language Questions over a domain of knowledge.
• Deliver:
Precise Answers: Determine what is being asked & give precise response.
Accurate Confidences: Determine likelihood answer is correct
Consumable Justifications: Explain why the answer is right
Fast Response Time: Precision & Confidence in <3 seconds
WATSON-TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THE MASTERPIECE
• Used 15Tb as Storage space. CDs would slow down the process and didn’t had the
ability to hold such a large amount of data.
• Produced results in 2-6 seconds that would take up to 2 hours on normal computer.
Thus providing a processor for each threads produced (complex branching
involved).Around 2600 processors were induced.
• Ten racks holding 90 servers holding almost 2880 processor cores running through
DeepQA software & storage.
• Thousands of algorithm fire at the same time to find the answer. At the end another
algorithm takes over and combines all the answers to find the correct one, thus giving
score to each algorithm.
• It doesn’t itself know how to read a sentence, so engineers come in at this point. They
write algorithms to break the sentence into parts that can be fed into the system and
Watson can then create a connection.
WATSON – FUTURE APPLICATIONS
• It has future applications in the following sectors –
1. RETAIL
2. SMART CITY
3. EDUCATION
4. HEALTH CARE
5. PERSONAL SECURITY ASSISTANT
