Next Generation Computing –
Why?
Certain kinds of problems in domains such as
o Weather forecasting,
o bioinformatics,
o robotics, and autonomous systems
o aerospace, automotive and manufacturing require
computing power which was typical of
supercomputers
- limitations tied to the conventional
computing paradigm

Do we need to
explore and harness new computing paradigms to
address unresolved and as yet unforeseen challenges?

The answer of course is YES

magnitude faster than existing systems.
• Quantum technologies for creating random numbers and securely
encrypting communication.

Quantum computing - Key Facts

• Quantum computing is a new generation of technology that involves a

type of computer 158 million times faster than the most
sophisticated supercomputer we have in the world today.

• It is a device so powerful that it could do in four minutes what it

would take a traditional supercomputer 10,000 years to accomplish

• quantum systems with 13 million qubits would be sufficient to break

the cryptographic algorithm (SHA-256) that secures the Bitcoin
blockchain within the space of 24 hours.

In August 2021, India launched the Quantum Computer Simulator (QSim)

Toolkit to provide the first quantum development environment to
academicians, industry professionals, students and the scientific community
in India.

Nanocomputing

• Used for the representation and manipulation of data by

computers smaller than a microcomputer.

• The current goal is to produce computers smaller than 10

nanometers

• Has the advantage of being produced to fit into any environment,

including the human body, whilst being undetectable to the naked
eye.

Cloud Computing

• Cloud computing is the on-demand availability of computer system resources, and

applications especially data storage (cloud storage) and computing power,

• without direct active management by the user

• Large clouds often have functions distributed over multiple locations, each location
being a data center.

• Cloud computing relies on sharing of resources to achieve coherence

• typically using a "pay-as-you-go" model which can help in reducing capital

expenses

PAGE 14
Next Generation Computing -
Paradigms
Edge computing

• A distributed computing paradigm that brings computation and  data

storage closer to the sources of data.

• The aim of edge computing is to move the computation away from data
centers

• Bring it towards the edge of the network, exploiting smart objects, mobile
phones, or network gateways to perform tasks and provide services on
behalf of the cloud.

• it is possible to provide content caching, service delivery, persistent data

storage, and IoT management

• Expected to improve response times, transfer rates and save bandwidth

PAGE 15
Next Generation Computing -
Paradigms

Serverless computing

• Serverless computing is a cloud computing execution model

• the cloud provider allocates machine resources on demand, taking care of the
servers on behalf of their customers.

• Developers of serverless applications are not concerned with capacity

planning, configuration, management, maintenance, fault tolerance, or scaling
of containers, VMs, or physical servers.

• When an app is not in use, there are no computing resources allocated to the
app.

• Pricing is based on the actual amount of resources consumed by an

PAGE 16
application
Next Generation Computing -
Paradigms
Distributed computing

• Is a model in which components of a software system are shared among

multiple computers

• components are located on different networked computers possibly on

different geographies,

• which communicate and coordinate their actions by passing messages to one

another from any system.

• The components interact with one another in order to achieve a common

goal.

• Even though the components are spread out across multiple computers, they
are run as one system.

Next Generation Computing -

Grid Computing
Grid computing is the practice of leveraging multiple computers, often
geographically distributed but connected by networks, to work together to
accomplish joint tasks.

• It is typically run on a “data grid,” a set of computers that directly interact

with each other to coordinate jobs

• The software acts as the manager of the entire system and coordinates
various tasks across the grid.

• the software assigns subtasks to each computer so they can work

simultaneously on their respective subtasks.

• After the completion of subtasks, the outputs are gathered and aggregated
PAGE 18
to complete a larger-scale task

Cognitive computing

•  Cognitive computing is the use of computerized models to simulate the human thought
process in complex situations
• where the answers may be ambiguous and uncertain.
• The phrase is closely associated with IBM's cognitive computer system, Watson.

• Cognitive computing systems are thinking, reasoning and remembering systems

• That work with humans to provide them with helpful advice in making decisions
• Its insights are intended for human consumption.

Optical computing

• Optical computing or photonic computing uses light waves produced by lasers or

incoherent sources for data processing, data storage or data communication.
• Optical chips will power our future datacenters and supercomputers.
• Optical computing is the use of photons in computation. Photons, effectively massless and
incredibly fast, are generated using diodes or lasers.
• The photons take the place of electrons in more traditional computers and are
used to represent the flow of data

An optical computing system needs three things to function well:

1.optical processor
2.optical data transfer, e.g. fiber-optic cable
3.Optical storage

Biological/Molecular computing

•  branch of computing that uses DNA, biochemistry, and molecular biology hardware,
instead of traditional silicon-based computer technologies

• With the development of new generation sequencing technology, the scale of DNA, RNA,
and protein biological database has been increasing dramatically [

• Bioinformatics combines the tools of mathematics, computer science, and biology to

more efficiently understand the biological implications and significance for a variety of
sequence and structure data as well as other biological data
