BASCULE BRIDGES

Bascule bridge is a movable bridge with a counterweight that

continuously balances a span throughout its upward swing to provide
clearance for boat traffic. Bascule bridges are those which move about
a horizontal axis, either fixed or moving. Bascule word means ‘See-
saw’, one part goes up and other goes down.
Methodology Used
Types of Truss Systems Analyzed

 Truss System I (Bailey Truss)

The Bailey bridge is a type of portable, pre-fabricated, truss bridge. A Bailey bridge had
the advantages of requiring no special tools or heavy equipment to assemble.
 Truss System II (BALTIMORE)
The Baltimore truss is a subclass of the Pratt truss. A Baltimore truss has
additional bracing in the lower section of the truss to prevent buckling in the
compression members and to control deflection. It is mainly used for rail
bridges, showing off a simple and very strong design.
 Truss System III
Named for their shape, bowstring trusses were first used for arched truss
bridges, often confused with tied-arch bridges.
 Truss System IV (Warren Truss)
Truss members form a series of equilateral triangles, alternating up and
down.
Types of Truss Systems Analyzed

 Truss System V (Warren with Verticals Truss)

It is a sub-type of warren truss in which a vertical section is added in each
equilateral triangle member for extra support.
 Truss System VI (Double Intersection Warren)
Structure is indeterminate. Members act in both compression and tension.
Two triangular web systems are superimposed upon each other with or
without verticals.
 Truss System VII (New 1)
After studying various kind of truss and analyzing them, we developed a new
kind of truss system, hence named New1.

1. Dead load:
steel plate of 100*60*0.06562 ft
density of steel = 2.1914 KN/ft3
total loading= 2.1914(100*60*0.06562)=862.8 KN

2. Wind load:
Wind load is calculated as per IS recommendations.

3. Seismic load: seismic load is also calculated as per IS recommendations.

4.Load combinations: Three load combinations have been defined for the
analysis purpose
(i) Dead load + Seismic Load along the leaf span
(ii) Dead load + Seismic Load perpendicular to the lead span
(iii) Dead load + Wind load
