Applications of Transgenic Animals : Health
1. Recombinant Therapeutic Protein

(Rajoriya et al., 2013)

Applications of Transgenic Animals : Health
2. Blood Substitute
Production of functional hemoglobin from swine
which has the same oxygen binding capacity as that of
normal human hemoglobin and that could be purified
from porcine blood.
(Chang and D’Agnillo, 1988)
Applications of Transgenic Animals : Health
3. Antibody
 Production of human
monoclonal antibodies
from human Ig translocus
mice (Bruggemman, 2001).
 Production of human
polyclonal antibodies from
calves and goat (Kuroiwa
et al., 2002).
(Pollock et al., 1999)
Applications of Transgenic Animals : Health
4. Xenotransplantation
Living cell/ tissue/ organ would be
transplanted from animals into humans until
human replacement organs become
available.
 Use pig islets to boost insulin production in
patients with type-I diabetes (Fabregas,
2006).
 Use pig hearts for patients with heart
failure rather than using mechanical
pumps (Fabregas, 2006).

Applications of Transgenic Animals : Environment
Pollution Indicator
a. Fish
 inserted GFP into a zebrafish embryo
 develop a fish that could detect pollution
by selectively fluorescing in the presence
of environmental toxins
(Dr. Zhiyuan Gong, 1999)

b. Frog
 African Clawed Frogs (Xenopus laevis)
were used as endocrine disrupting
chemicals in wastewater
Ethical Issue of Transgenic Animals : Cons

great suffering to the animals

reduce them to mere factories

animals have the same basic rights as human beings

animals have a right to exist as a separate identifiable entity

Conclusion
• Two transgenic goats with a stably integrated hG-CSF gene

* were capable of secreting recombinant hG-CSF from the

lactating mammary gland without causing any harm to the
animals’ health and transmitting hG-CSF to first generation
progeny of each line.

• Aplications of transgenic animals are for health

(recombinant therapeutic protein, blood substitute,
antibody, xenotransplantation, human disease model),
* agriculture (meat production, growth rate, milk production,
fiber production, feed conversion, new habitat, disease
resistant, reproductive performance) and environment
(polution indicator).
