define the term “team”?
DEFINITION
A team is a group of two or
more persons who interact
regularly and coordinate their
work to accomplish a common
objective.
THE NATURE OF TEAMS
THE NATURE OF TEAMS
Teams are created to undertake a
large unit of work compared with
complete “division of labor with
each individual worker specializes
in a small unit of work.”
Activity 2

Explain the components of an

effective team?
Composition

Appropriate workers must be

allocated to each team and the
actual makeup of each team will
depend on its central aim and
purpose
Shared Objectives

Team members must know

why the team was created and
how its success will be judged
Shared Objectives

A team can only work well if

there are clear and agreed
objectives to work towards.
Shared Objectives
Team members cannot work to
‘individual targets or agendas.’
“No its “I said I
OUR will do it
work!” alone!”
Interaction
Team members working
together will need to interact
frequently.
Activity 3

Examine the pictures in the

next slide and explain what the
clips are displaying?
INTERACTION
INTERACTION

Lines of communication must

be formal and informal and
two way.
Activity 4

Looking at the picture on the

next slide discuss what you think
is happening?
Interaction
“We can
work this
out!”
INTERACTION

Conflicts should be openly raised

and sorted out.
Activity 5

In groups list some of the

characteristics of effective
teams?
Characteristics of Effective Teams
• Commitment
• Participation
• Trust
• Decision by
consensus
• Flexibility
• Encouragement
• Support and growth
Commitment
Commitment
• Do team members want to work
in the team?
• Do they feel that the purpose of
the team is worthwhile?
Commitment
Are team members excited and
challenged by the opportunity to
work within the team and work
towards its objectives?
Commitment
• Do team members expect to be recognized for
their contribution?
Commitment

• No – Level of motivation of some

team members will be low and
the work of the team will suffer
and the work of the group will be
less effective than it could be.
Participation

Team working is likely to work

best with a participative
management style and culture.
Participation
Work related problems often require
the contribution and participation of
all team members before an effective
solution can be found.
Trust

Senior managers need to show trust

in their groups and their members.
Trust
Senior managers are to handover
some direct control to the teams and
show trust in their ability to meet the
agreed objectives
Decision by Consensus
Participative style management leads
to empowerment of teams and to
teams making decisions by
consensus.
Decision by Consensus
Empowerment and the feeling of
importance will likely result in
greater commitment from all
members.

Flexibility
• Teams are small units than the
organization as a whole and this can
lead to quick decisions and rapid
responses to new circumstances.
Flexibility
Teams are usually more flexible and
able to respond to changed
circumstances than an organization
that only uses the hierarchical
structure, with no group involvement.
Encouragement

Good teams will support and

encourage each other.
Encouragement

Team spirit can be a very

powerful influence, and
identifying with one’s team can
lead to great loyalty and mutual
support
Support and Growth
Teams need support from senior
management.
Support and Growth
Adequate training and resources are
needed in order to complete their
tasks successfully.

(12 marks)
Closure
Some of us build and some knock down,
others grow vegetables in the ground
Some cook meals and some deliver,
some fix the heat so we don't shiver
Some look for answers so they'll know,
and others take you where you want to go
Some sell food to fill your fridge,
some take money to cross the bridge
Everyone is important
if you know what I mean
we can make it happen
we're part of a great big TEAM
Team workers need to spend 80% of their time
performing excellent work and 20% supporting
their colleagues. They will then build a good
climate, generate ideas and produce results.
