Bomb calorimeter
Definition
 a device for determining heats of
combustion by ignition a sample in a
high pressure of oxygen in a sealed
vessel .
 used for measuring the calorific value of
foods
Calorific value

 the number of heat units liberated by a

unit mass of a sample burned with oxygen
in an enclosure of constant volume.
 calorific values of solid and liquid
combustible samples.
Types of calorimeter

 Adiabatic calorimeter.
 Cal- vet type calorimeter.
 Constant calorimeter .
 Differential scanning calorimeter.
 Isothermal titration calorimeter.
Object

 Determine the gross calorific value of

given sample of coal .
Apparatus
 Thermometer
 Stopwatch
 Balance
 Oxygen cylinder
 Platinum or copper wire
 Bomb calorimeter
Procedure
 I took 1or2g of sample of air dried coal and
compressed it into a cylindrical coal by
briquette press machine.
 A piece of firing wire, copper or fine platinum is
stretched across the inner terminals of the bomb
and a piece of sewing cotton.
 The bomb is charged with oxygen to a pressure
of 25 atmosphere.
 The calorimeter vessel is then charged with a
weighed quantity of water to submerge the
bomb up till cover completely.
 Beckmann's Thermometer is adjusted along
with the cover of calorimeter ,start the stirrer
and allow it to run for 5 minutes.
 Compared the both temperature initial and
final.
Uses
 Coal and coke,
 Fuel oil, both heavy and light varieties.
 Gasoline, all motor fuel .
 Foodstuffs .
 Building materials.
 Explosives and heat powders.
 Rocket fuels and related propellants.
