ACADEMIC FACILITIES

ACADEMIC FACILITIES:
IIFM, BHOPAL,M.P
The design of Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM), Bhopal is inspired by the belief
that Institutions are self-contained entities, whose growth is nurtured by a process of self-
renewal through the various stages of their development.

•The complex should be architecturally

interpreted as a homogenous entity
rather than as separately identified
buildings for specific functions on
distinct territories.
• This perception of continuity mitigates
isolationist tendencies and eases the
progress towards academic and social
interaction.
•The plan attempts lo create a sense of
community without contradicting the
student's need to feel independent.

Plan of academic complex:

1. Accounts Office
2. Administrative Office
3. Faculty Research Offices
4. Seminar Rooms
5. Class Rooms
6. Library and Computer Centre
7. Auditorium, W. Overhead Water Tank

Relating the Buildings: The 65 hectares of site is open and rises approximately
50 metres from the lower road level on a hill plateau, and is heavily contoured on the
western and southern sides, while the eastern side has gradual slopes. The major axis
runs northsouth, and the main circulation spine is located on this north-south axis.
The plan of the academic area focuses on the faculty and research offices that form the
crucial inner core located equidistant from the administrative offices on one side and the
teaching areas on the other side. In place of a continuous narrow corridor, individual set
back lobbies serve as stop-off meeting places, opening towards courts.
The hill site is crowned by the academic complex and is marked by the
presence of a compact, cohesive group of buildings which constitute
the working zone. This area flows along the flat contours, providing a
linear form capable of extensions along the side of promenade. The
core area is composed of the auditorium, library and the academic
court.
The buildings which form the academic court area contain large and
small classrooms and the library, auditorium and seminar rooms. No
building, except the library, is expected to be more than two stories
high. The library may eventually become a four-storeyed building
serving as a strong focal point and as a symbolic anchor of
the academic court. The Seminar rooms vary in size so as to
accommodate between 15 to 40 students.
•The Amphitheatre, with a capacity of 750, is planned for
multipurpose activities - speech, music or film.
THE LIVING ZONE consists of student dormitories, kitchen, dining
areas and other spaces for group meetings.
•Student dormitories are located at the southern Lip of the academic
complex.
•All dormitories are oriented towards the lakes on the southern
slopes and area in close proximity to the library in the academic
complex. The rows of trees between the student dormitories and the
academic complex create a buffer zone besides providing shaded
walkways connecting the groups of dormitories.
The main features of the site are the two hillocks with outcrops of
slate stone and depressions. As a counterpoint to the natural
features, deep bands of trees, selected from the types found on the
hill, arc expected to shade the walkways and certain areas of the
courts, once fully grown. Water bodies, all over the site, carry water in
narrow channels to the green areas. A water reservoir on top of one
of the hillocks gives a strong focus to the landscape.
