What this period is about
 This period is about America after WWI, during the Great
Depression, and WWII
1919
 The United States was in turmoil throughout 1919. After
the war, fear of subversion resumed in the context of the
Red Scare, massive strikes in major industries (steel,
meatpacking) and violent race riots.
 Radicals bombed Wall Street, and workers went on strike
in Seattle in February. During 1919, a series of more than
20 riotous and violent black-white race-related incidents
occurred. These included the Chicago, Omaha, and
Elaine Race Riots.
The Red Scare
 On May 1, 1919, a parade in Cleveland, Ohio, protesting the
imprisonment of the Socialist Party leader, Eugene Debs, erupted
into the violent May Day Riots.
 Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer conducted the Palmer Raids, a
series of raids and arrests of non-citizen socialists, anarchists,
radical unionists, and immigrants. The people who were arrested
got charged and deported back to Europe.
After World War I
 In 1919, Woodrow Wilson campaigned for the U.S. to
join the new League of Nations, which he had been
instrumental in creating, but he rejected the
Republican compromise on the issue
 While on a tour to promote the League, he suffered
strokes and was unable to recover
The Great Depression
 It occurred due to the passing of the Smoot-Hawley
Tariff bill, which taxed more than 20,000 imported
goods
 Many stock prices began to fall quickly and then
finally crashed on October 29, 1929, which is now
known as Black Tuesday
 Unemployment rose to 25% in the U.S., crop prices
fell 60%, and industrial production fell almost 50%
Pearl Harbor Bombing
 The attack on Pearl Harbor influenced many literary
pieces about anger and shock to this incident
 This incident was caused by the Japanese during
WWII in order to cripple America's defenses
 It also caused America to enter the war
Literature
 Literature during this period was modernist
 Stories were thoughtful and self-reflective or had a sense of
alienation as a result of differing ways of processing the changing
times
 They explored gender roles, racial issues and an inclusion of pop
culture
