OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELPH
LET’S GET TO KNOW HER
OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP
History:
Back at year 1495, when the image was
carried off or possibly stolen by a merchant
who took it with him to Rome. Shortly after
arriving there, the man became grievously
ill. Before his death, he begged a friend to
take the icon to one of the churches in Rome
so that it could be publicly venerated. Upon
his death, however, the friend’s wife
persuaded her husband to allow her to
keep the painting in their home
OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP
One night the Blessed Virgin appeared to
the man in a dream, warning him not to keep
the picture. Twice she appeared to him with
this message, and both times he disregarded
her warning. The third time she told him that
if he continued to disobey her, he would die
a miserable death. This time the man tried to
persuade his wife to give up the painting,
but she refused. Our Lady appeared to the
man again to tell him of his impending
death. Then, he became sick and died.
OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP
Our Lady then appeared to the man’s 6-
year-old daughter, telling her to tell her
mother. The mother, who had seen a
similar vision, was terrified and was about
to give the picture to a church when a
neighbor woman persuaded her that it
was just a dream and that she should pay
no attention to it. That night the neighbor
became violently ill, and recognizing her
fault, made a solemn promise to the Lady
of the picture, whereupon she was

immediately cured. Again the Blessed Virgin
appeared to the young girl, this time commanding
her to tell her mother to place her picture in a
certain church between St. Mary Major’s and St.
John Lateran’s. That very day, March 27, 1499, the
picture was taken in solemn procession to the church
of St. Matthew the Apostle, where it was placed
above the exquisite white-marble altar. The church
itself was very small — only about 75 feet long
and 35 feet wide. Nevertheless, the shower of
miraculous graces began even before the image
entered its walls, with a paralyzed man being
cured as the procession passed by his house.
OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP
Feast Day: June 27
Celebration: Novena prayers every
Wednesday and also celebrated through
mass.

OUR LADY OF PILLAR
LET’S GET TO KNOW HER!
OUR LADY OF PILLAR
History
Our Lord Sends Our Lady To ZaragozaOn the
night of the second of January, forty years
after the birth of our Savior, Saint James was
walking along the banks of the river Ebro with
seven disciples whom he had won to the Faith
in Zaragoza. Inspired by the calm beauty of
the night and the contemplation of the glories
of the Heavenly dome, in whose wonders they
saw the Master’s hand, they spoke reverently
of the sublime mysteries of the Divinity.
OUR LADY OF PILLAR
At the same hour the Blessed Virgin was in
Jerusalem, praying to her Son for Saint
James, who, she knew, would soon be
called upon to give his life for the Faith.
While she prayed, her Divine Son
appeared to her and, as the Venerable
Mary of Agreda relates in her Mystical
City of God, He commissioned her to go to
Zaragoza:
OUR LADY OF PILLAR
Feast Day: October 12
Celebration: On October 11, bands
parade the streets and fireworks are set off
at intervals. This is the formal announcement
to the public that the festivals are about to
commence. As early as two o’clock on the
morning of the 12th, the crowds begin to
enter the church, and when the beautiful
voices of the Infantes sing the first notes of
the Mass, the edifice is so packed that it is
difficult to move.
OUR LADY OF PILLAR
When the sun has set and night begins to fall,
the bells peal a joyous call to the Salve
Regina, all the doors are thrown wide open,
and the church soon fills to capacity, without
apparently diminishing the immense throngs
that have gathered in the Plaza del Pilar.
All sorts of faces mingle with throngs of
soldiers, priests, and Infantes, all pressing as
one moving mass to hear the solemn notes of
the Salve, the last act of devotion of the Feast
of Our Lady of the Pillar.
OUR LADY OF PILLAR
At the same hour the Blessed Virgin was in
Jerusalem, praying to her Son for Saint
James, who, she knew, would soon be
called upon to give his life for the Faith.
While she prayed, her Divine Son
appeared to her and, as the Venerable
Mary of Agreda relates in her Mystical
City of God, He commissioned her to go to
Zaragoza:
DEVOTION TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
"All generations will call me blessed": "The Church's devotion to the
Blessed Virgin is intrinsic to Christian worship."515 The Church rightly
honors "the Blessed Virgin with special devotion. From the most
ancient times the Blessed Virgin has been honored with the title of
'Mother of God,' to whose protection the faithful fly in all their
dangers and needs. . . . This very special devotion . . . differs
essentially from the adoration which is given to the incarnate Word
and equally to the Father and the Holy Spirit, and greatly fosters this
adoration."516 The liturgical feasts dedicated to the Mother of God
and Marian prayer, such as the rosary, an "epitome of the whole
Gospel," express this devotion to the Virgin Mary. (CFC 971)
