Treasure Hunt
Visit the National Museum’s National Gallery of Art and perform the
series of tasks. You are given a perfect score of 100 points at the
beginning. 1 point is deducted from you for every wrong answer
given or non-compliance observed. There are 30 tasks and the
lowest score you can get from this plate is 71.

Bring a camera, notebook and a pen. Once finished with the tour,
insert the answers (photos or words) in this powerpoint. Double
check your answers before emailing your ppt to me.
1. Go to Gallery 1, Luiz Ablaza Hall. Look for a salvaged baroque
altarpiece (retablo). Take a photo of it and insert it here.
2. Go to Gallery 2, FCCP Hall, and look at the Stations of the Cross by
an unknown Bohol artist. What is the name of the church that used
to display these paintings?
3. Go to Gallery III, which focuses on religious art of the Spanish
period. During this time, it was customary to create portraits of
saints showing how they died. Take a photo of the BIGGEST painting
showing in a very graphic manner how a particular saint died. Insert
the photo here.
4. Go to Gallery IV. Letras y figuras is a painting genre during the
Spanish colonial period that spells the name of a particular person
using the contoured shapes of human figures, animals, plants,
structures. Insert here an image of letras y figuras.
5. Go to Gallery IV, Fundacion Santiago Hall. In the 19th century, the
rise of the ilustrados saw the rise of demand for portraiture. A type of
painting, called miniaturismo, became a trend which shows the tiny
details of the embroidered clothes and ornate furniture of the
patrons. Artists of this genre include Simon Flores, Antonio Malantic,
Justiniano Asuncion. Insert here a sample of such painting.
6. Using the same painting, zoom your camera to the embroidery in
the portraiture. Take a clear photo of the tiny details of the
embroidery and insert it here.
7. Go to Gallery V which is a hall devoted to Jose Rizal. Look for the
sculpture made by Jose Rizal that shows the love of a mother for her
child as shown by the mother’s courage to save her offspring. Insert
here the photo of the said sculpture.
8. In the hallway between Gallery V and VI, you will encounter 4 life
size figure sculptures done in the Neoclassical tradition. Take a clear
picture of any one of the sculptures (from head to toe) and insert it
here.
9. Go to Gallery VI, a hall devoted to Juan Luna and Felix R. Hidalgo.
Look for a Romantic painting by Hidalgo which shows the dead
being welcomed by Charon (Greek mythology) to ferry them in a
boat to Hades (or gates of hell). Insert the image of the painting
here. (Trivia: this painting won a silver medal in the Paris Exposition
in 1889).
10. In the same Gallery, look for a graphic design, a logo to be exact,
by premier painter Juan Luna. Take a photo of the design and insert
it here.
11. In the hallway near Gallery VI, you will find a display of
sculptures. Look for jars made by Isabelo Tampinco that remind you
of Ancient Roman vases. Select one vase and take its photo. Insert
the photo here.
12. Go to Gallery VIII, the Silvina and Juan Laya Hall. This hall is
devoted to artworks that remember the horrors of World War 2.
Look for the biggest Fernando Amorsolo (the first National Artist)
painting in the room and insert its picture here.
13. Go to Gallery IX, the hall devoted to portraiture, and look for a
small painting entitled Dalagang Bukid (Country Lass) by Fernando
Amorsolo. Take a photo of this small painting and insert its image
here.
14. Go to Gallery X, MFP Hall, which displays the big paintings of
National Artist Carlos Francisco on the progress of Medicine in the
Philippines. Take a picture of the painting that tackles the American
period and insert it here.
15. Go to Gallery XI, SPPC Hall and you will see a display of 3 painted
windows for a mortuary chapel. Who is the designer of the
window?
16. Go to Gallery X, MFP Hall, which displays Carlos Francisco’s big
paintings on the progress of Medicine in the Philippines. In what
hospital were these paintings originally displayed?
17. Go to Gallery devoted to sculptor Guillermo Tolentino (National
Artist), look for his print Filipino Ilustres and insert its image here.
Do you recognize the heroes depicted here?
18. In Gallery XXIII, look for the transparent cubism painting of
Vicente Manansala that depicts Filipinos working together for the
welfare of their neighbor. This 1979 painting is entitled?
19. In Gallery XXV, you will see a set of 7 large paintings (transparent
cubism style) by National Artist Vicente Manansala. What is the
name of the company that commissioned him to do the paintings?
20. Go to the 2nd floor hallway that exhibits Philippine Abstraction
from the 1960s to 1980s. Look for one pointillist painting created by
a Filipina artist. What is the name of the female artist?
21. In the same hallway exhibit, take a picture of an Abstract
Expressionist painting. Insert the picture here.
22. In the room Pillars of Philippine Modernism (Gallery XIV), look
for two modern sculptures that depict a family. Choose one and
insert the picture of your selected artwork here.
23. An impasto is an art term used to describe thickly textured paint
that is almost three-dimensional in appearance. Using
an impasto technique often leaves visible brush strokes in the
finished painting. In Gallery XVIII, look for examples of impasto.
Who is the artist that uses impasto in this room?
24.-25. (2 points) In relation to this, insert 2 images of his impasto
painting. One is a picture showing the whole painting and the other
one is a zoom in showing the textures of his impasto painting.
26. In the same room, you will find a big sculpture that reminds us
of Cubism. What is the name of the National Artist who sculpted
this?
27. In Gallery XX, GSIS Hall, you will see paintings by Fernando
Amorsolo. Insert here an image of his painting that show either the
religiosity of the Filipino or the industry of the Filipino. Choose only
one.
28. In the lobby of the museum, go to the room that displays Juan
Luna’s Spoliarium. Take a photo of people having their picture taken
in front of the award winning painting. Make sure the whole
painting is within the camera frame. Insert the picture here.
29. Go to the façade of the National Gallery of the Arts. Have your
selfie taken showing the Corinthian columns at the back and the
name National Museum just above the columns.
