TAXONOMY- is a
branch of
Science
concerned in
classification of
organisms or
living things.
VERTEBRATES
• Vertebrates are animals that
have BACKBONE.
INVERTEBRATES
• Invertebrates are animals that
do not have backbone.
CLASSIFICATION OF
VERTEBRATES
Cooperative learning
1. Setting of Standard for working in
Groups.
2. Group Activity
(Differentiated Activities)
3. Teacher supervise the group while
the pupils are answering the
given activity (3-5 minutes).
THE VERTEBRATES
VERTEBRATES
• Belong to Phylum Chordata
consist of animals with dorsal
spinal cord running along the
entire length of their body.
• Cartilage or Bones are the
building minerals of the
vertebrates’ endoskeleton.

VERTEBRATES
1.Reptiles
2.Birds
3.Amphibians
4.Fishes
5.Mammals
MAMMALS
MONOTREMES
• Monotremes
are egg-
laying
mammals.
• Ex: Platypus
Anteater
MARSUPIALS
• Marsupials
are the
Pouched
Mammals.
• Ex.
Kangaroo
Opossum
PLACENTAL MAMMALS
• Placental are the
largest group and
most successful
of all mammals.
• They develop
their youngs’
inside the
mother’s body.
KINDS OF PLACENTAL
MAMMALS
1. Insect- eating Mammals
2. Flying Mammals

REPTILES
• Reptiles are cold-blooded
vertebrates or ectotherms.
• Reptiles are terrestrial animals. They
are fully adapted to life on land.
• Reptiles have dry, scaly skin. Some
have scales and others have shells.
• Reptiles breath through their lungs.
REPTILES
• Reptiles use their legs and
feet to move.
• Some reptiles are born alive
and some are hatched from
eggs.
REPTILES
REPTILES
REPTILES
• Crocodiles and Alligators
are the largest living reptiles.
• Turtles are encased by
protective shells. The upper
shell is called a carapace the
lower shell is called the
plastron.
REPTILES
• Snakes have dry skin that shed
periodically. They are carnivores,
eating their prey or swallowing them
alive.
• Poisonous snakes have fangs that
inject venom. Venom once injected
attacks nervous tissues causing
paralysis or death.
SNAKES
POISONOUS SNAKE

NON-POISONOUS
SNAKE
LIZARDS
• Lizards are four-legged reptiles.
• They have movable eyelids and
ear openings.
• Their skins are covered in dry
scales.
LIZARDS

GECKO
FLYING LIZARD
3. AMPHIBIANS
• Amphibians are cold-blooded
animals that spend part of their
lives in water and part on land.
• Young amphibians breath through
their gills. As they grow, their gills
disappear and lungs take their
place.
AMPHIBIANS
• Amphibians lay eggs.
• Their eggs have no shells, instead
their eggs have jelly-like structures.
• Their eggs develop to an adult
through a series of stages called
metamorphosis.
AMPHIBIANS
• There are two major groups the
tailed amphibians and the tailless
amphibians.
• The tailed amphibians have long
bodies and tails. Ex. Salamander
• The tailless amphibians have short
bodies and has no tail. Ex: Frog

4. BIRDS
• Birds are warm-blooded animals
or endotherms.
• Birds are only animals that have
feathers.
• Birds have strong and lightweight
bones that are adapted for flying.
BIRDS
• The mouth of a bird is in the
form of a horn-covered beak or
bill.
• Birds lay eggs with shells.
Their youngs are hatched from
eggs.

ectotherms.
• Most fishes have vertebral column,
jaws, paired fins and scales.
• Fishes breath with gills. It takes
water in through its mouth.
• Fishes lay eggs on water. Their
young's’ are hatched from eggs.
