ABSTRACT
The crane hook is a device used for grabbing or lifting load by mean of crane . That Is
most crucial part of the assembly because it hold the weight for a very long time so the
Failure chance are very high, to minimize the failure of crane hook , the stress induced in it
must be studied. If crack is generated due to loading it cause facture and lead to serious
accident . In ductile fracture, the crack propagates continuously and is more easily
detectible and hence preferred over brittle fracture. In brittle fracture, there is sudden
propagation of the crack and hook fails suddenly. This type of fracture is very dangerous
as it is difficult to detect. That Must be design to provide maximum performance without
failure. In our current research we design for 20 ton crane hook by using Hypermesh 13.0
and avoid failure by two ways , first one by changing the shape or cross section or
secondly by changing the material properties.

MATERIAL PROPERTIES-

Cast iron Forged steel Wrought iron

Cast metals are metals that are made molten and then poured into a mold, which leads to
their final finished shapes. Wrought steel begins life as cast steel that is poured into
ingots or molds. After it has cooled, the steel is reheated and rolled into a final finished
shape. This means that wrought steel has some of the structural properties of cast steel,
such as additional weight of metal required to have the same structural integrity as a
similar piece of forged steel. Wrought steel is also less likely to be used in high-tension
applications and it may be harder and more brittle than forged steel.
Methodology
• Firstly take the reference design of crane hook for 20 ton load
• Change the area of cross section (rectangular, triangular, trapezoidal, I section) by
keeping the same loading condition.
• Analyse the above four cross section for different materials combination
• Analyse the above combination for different parameters like stress, FOS, weight
etc.
• The different graphs and tables will drawn for each parameter
• The best combination will be find out as the result of the research.
Conclusion
In our research work we perform static structural analysis on the hook structure with different
Combination of cross section and materials and find out the best combination which is free from
Failures and durable as well. Also it may have low cost and high strength .
