Bulkheads

Bulkheads
• Vertical position in transverse/ longitudinal direction --- bulkhead.
• Divides ship into water tight compartments.
• Reduces volume of water in case of hull damage.
• Used for separation of different cargo’s & division Tanks.
• Division of cargo space & machinery space.
• Of sufficient strength / water tight to contain flooding.
• Act as a strength member carrying vertical load (from above deck) &
resist tendency for transverse deformation.
• Effective against spread of any fire in hold or machinery space.
• No. of bulkheads depends on ships length & machinery space
position
• Bulkheads increase transverse strength of the ship. Prevent undue
distortion of side shell, reduce racking a lot.
• Longitudinal deck girders/ deck longitudinal supported at the
bulkhead
Bulkheads
• Collision bulkhead – 1/20th of the ships length from first forward
perpendicular and continuous till uppermost continuous deck.
• Stern tube enclosed in water tight compartment formed by stern
frame and aft peak bulkhead.
• Ship length > 90m , additional bulkheads required , depending on L
• Bulkhead to extend till freeboard deck & preferable equally spaced in
the ship.
• Water tight bulkheads formed by plates attached to shell, deck and
Tank top by welding.
• Bulkheads supported by vertical stiffeners 760 mm apart.
• Ends of stiffeners bracketed to tank top/deck.
• If brackets omitted result is heavy stiffeners.
• Stiffeners are bulb plates or toe welded angles.
• Bulkheads tested for water tightness by Hosing them by water
pressure.
• Test from the side where stiffeners by glands
• Pipes/cables thru bulkheads – water tight integrity to be maintained.
