SPANISH RULES
(1600s-1800s)
• Spain governed the Philippines through the
union of church and state.
• They introduced the process of new belief,
institutions, and practices in political,
economic and religious aspects of peoples
lives.
Reasons for Spanish Colonization

Two reasons

1. Right of discovery
2. Right of actual occupation
Political Changes
• As a crowned colony Phil. was administered by
the Council of Indies
• In 1863, the Phil., as a colony was placed
under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of
Colonies or Overseas Ministry (Ministerio de
Ultramar)
