VISUAL ARTS
LINE

LINE

 It is a one-dimensional element measured
only in length.
A fluid connection between two or more
points
 It is just man’s invention. It does not exist in
nature – the lines we see in nature on close
observation are veins of leaves or just edges
of things around us.
MEANING OF LINES

HORIZONTAL LINES creates an impression
of serenity and perfect stability. Generally
creates relaxation and they tend to be quiet
and subtle
Example:
Sleeping Person
Sea
VERTICAL LINES

VERTICAL LINES appears poised and stable.
It can create a mood of grandeur or
spirituality
Example:
 Straight Tree (Strong)
 Person Standing Tall (Confident)
DIAGONAL LINES

 Implies action
 Means unrest and movement

Example:
 A tree that is about to fall
 A running man
CURVED LINES

Results when there is a gradual change of
direction. create familiarity and feels very
organic.
Example:
Curves of a woman’s figure
Rounded petals
Shapes of a crescent moon
CIRCULAR LINES

Abrupt change of
direction, creates
tension and an
impression of
chaos, confusion or
conflict.
THICK LINES

 Represents power and respect.
 Builds a feeling of boldness
THIN LINES

tend to feel fragile, but their subtle feeling
makes them great for directing the eye
without being annoying.
empathetic to the viewer and tend to create a
feeling of comfort and tranquility.

 An enclosed line used to simplify
ideas.
 They help to create complex
drawings and paintings, affect
compositions and contribute to the
balance within a work.

Value

The lightness or darkness of
tones or colors. White is the
lightest value; black is the
darkest. The value halfway
between these extremes is
called middle gray

Exist as an illusion
in a graphic arts.
COLOR

The property possessed by an object of
producing different sensations on the
eye as a result of the way the object
reflects or emits light.

 Hue – name of the color

Value – hue’s lightness and
darkness (a color’s value
changes when white or black is
added)

Intensity / Saturation

Determines if the color is strong
and bright or faint and dull

MEANING OF COLORS



Yellow is the color of
the mind and the
intellect. It also suggest
cowardice.


 Orange is the color of
social communication and
optimism. It is a also a sign
of pessimism.


 Green is the color of
balance and growth. It can
mean both self-reliance as a
positive and possessiveness
as a negative.


Pink is unconditional
love and nurturing.
Pink can also be
immature, silly and
girlish


Blue is the color of
trust and peace. It can
suggest loyalty and
integrity.


Indigo is the color of
intuition. It can also mean
idealism and addictive.


Purple is the color of the
imagination. It can also
mean creative, immature
and impractical.


White is color the
color that is most
complete and pure. It is
the color of perfection.


Black is the color of
the hidden, the
secretive and the
unknown. It creates an
air of mystery.


Gold is the color of success,
achievement and triumph. It
is also associated with
abundance and prosperity,
luxury and quality.


Red means love,
courage, anger and
passion. It also shows
excitement, danger,
blood and lust.
