When we open our

Bibles, FIRST thing we

do is to look for GOD.
When we see or
understand God, very
soon we will also see
ourselves.
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and
exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the
temple…… 5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man
of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and
my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.” Isa 6:1 & 5

5 My ears had heard of you

but now my eyes have seen you.
6 Therefore I despise myself

and repent in dust and ashes.” Job 42:5-6

God is merciful.
22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not
consumed,
for his compassions (mercy) never fail.

great is your faithfulness.

“God withholds the punishment that
our sins deserve.”

Mercy is God’s ministry to the miserable.

THE MERCY OF GOD
mistakes, misbehaviours and second chances:
the cases of Jonah, Moses and Samson
3 Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a
second time: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh
and proclaim to it the message I give you.”
3 Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went

to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it

took three days to go through it. 4 Jonah began
by going a day’s journey into the city,
proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will
be overthrown.” 5 The Ninevites believed God. A
fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the
greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. Jonah
3:1-5
Jonah
• The Failure: The word of
the LORD came to Jonah son of
Amittai: 2 “Go to the great city of
Nineveh and preach against it, because
its wickedness has come up before me.”
3 But Jonah ran away from the LORD and

headed for Tarshish. Jonah 1:1 -3

• The Second Chance: Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second
time: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give
you.” 3 Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh
was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. 4 Jonah began by
going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and
Nineveh will be overthrown.” 5 The Ninevites believed God. A fast was
proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.
Jonah 3:1-5
Moses
• The Failure: 11 One day, after
Moses had grown up, he went out to
where his own people were and
watched them at their hard labor. He
saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew,
one of his own people. 12 Looking this
way and that and seeing no one, he
killed the Egyptian and hid him in the
sand. Exo 2:11-12

•The Second Chance: 10 So now, go. I am

sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the
Israelites out of Egypt.” Exo 3:10
Samson
• The Failure: 17 So Samson told her
everything. “No razor has ever been
used on my head,” he said, “because I
have been a Nazirite dedicated to God
from my mother’s womb. If my head
were shaved, my strength would leave
me, and I would become as weak as
any other man.”

• The Second Chance: 30 Samson

said, “Let me die with the Philistines!”
Then he pushed with all his might, and
down came the temple on the rulers
and all the people in it. Thus he killed
many more when he died than while
he lived. Judges 16:17 & 30
22 The steadfast love of the LORD never
ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
23 they are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness.
