PIPING SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION
• Piping system?
-A piping system is a network of pipes, fittings and valves
intended to perform a specific job i.e. to carry or transfer fluids
from one equipment to another. The plumbing network
supplying water at your home is a common example of a piping
system.

Early History of Pipes

The history of pipes in the United Kingdom stretches back to the

Romans. Evidence of various degrees of engineering marvel, has
been found from as far back as 43 AD when the Romans invaded
England. The Romans were masters of engineering. Through a
series of Aqueduct’s, canals and rolled lead piping. Water was fed
from rivers, springs and lakes to the vast network of towns, cities
and garrisons.

Components of a Piping System
The most common components of a piping system are.
• Pipes
• Fittings
• Valves

Pipes
-Pipes are long cylinders used to carry or transfer fluids. The most
common fluids are water, oil, steam, air, milk or finished products
like paints, juices.

Fittings/Pipe Fittings

-is used in pipe systems to connect

straight pipe or tubing sections, adapt to different sizes or
shapes

Valve
A valve is a device that regulates, directs or controls the flow of a
fluid (gases, liquids, fluidized solids, or slurries) by opening,
closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. Valves are
technically fittings, but are usually discussed as a separate
category.

Piping system in Power Plants
Piping system in Power Plants are important they are
considered as the “Blood Vessels” of the plant .They can be
used as path ways for the steam to reach the prime movers, can
be used as temperature and pressure control system

10/2/2019
The design of the piping system directly affects the following
parameters:
• Temperature
• Pressure
• Output of the Prime movers

10/2/2019
• Pipes in the burners are designed in a snake like pattern this is
to prolong the steam to reach the prime movers and to
increase its temperature to make the steam to a super heated
steam
• Why Increase the temperature? With the increase in
temperature there will also be an increase in pressure
according to Gay-Lussac's Law

10/2/2019
• And an increase of pressure also means an increase of Force
the resulting force will be used to move the prime mover the
stronger the force the higher the output power will be.
• In conclusion the hotter the steam gets the more power will be
generated

Factors that affects Piping system
• Maximum and working pressures of pipes
• Maximum and working temperatures pipes
• Chemical properties of the fluid(Steam)
• The fluid velocity
• The pipe material and grade
• The safety factor or design application
