01 History 02 Characteristics

03 Functions and Operations 04 Applications

WHAT IS
OPTOCOUPLER?
An opto-isolator (also called an
optocoupler, photocoupler, or optical isolator)
is an electronic component that transfers
electrical signals between two isolated circuits
by using light.
PART 01

History of Optocoupler

recognized in 1963 by Akmenkalns,

Photoresistor-based opto-
isolators were introduced in
1968.
Commercialization of LED technology
in 1968–1970 caused a boom in
optoelectronics, and by the end of the
1970s the industry developed all
principal types of opto-isolators
Part 2

Characteristics
As an isolator, an
optocoupler can prevent high
voltages from affecting the
side of the circuit receiving
the signal.
Transferring signals over a
light barrier by using an
infrared light-emitting diode
and a light-sensitive product,
such as a phototransistor and
photodiode is the main
structure of an optocoupler.

Functions or Operations
OPERATION

A current is first applied to the Optocoupler,

which makes the infrared LED emit a light that's
proportional to the current. When the light hits
the photosensitive device, it switches on and
starts to conduct a current as any ordinary
transistor might.

APPLICATIONS
 used to link two circuits

 used within optical encoders, where the

optocoupler provides a means of detecting visible
edge transitions on an encoder wheel to detect
position, etc.,

 Detect link breakage

 Transfer data optically
