LESSON 13

THE
DISADVANTAGES
AND
ADVANTAGES OF
OPTOCOUPLERS
WHAT IS AN OPTOCOUPLERS USED FOR?
An optocoupler is a piece of electronic equipment used to
optically transmit electrical signals between two circuits. The
two circuits are electrically isolated from one another and it
is used to transfer electrical signals from one circuit to
another without physically connecting the two. At potentials
up to 5,000 volts, optocouplers are employed to maintain
electrical isolation while transmitting analog or digital data
between circuits. They are frequently employed to block
electrical surges, noise, and EMF from entering an MCU
circuit. Additionally, telephone networks are isolated from
other devices using optocouplers.
ADVANTAGES OF OPTOCOUPLERS:
Electrical isolation between input and
output circuits
One-way transmission of signal
No influence of output signal on the
input
Strong anti-interference ability
Stable operation
No contact
Long service life
High transmission efficiency
DISADVANTAGES OF OPTOCOUPLERS:

Optocouplers are not capable to handle

high current
Optocoupler needs external biasing voltage
for its operation.
The High-frequency response is poor.
Optocouplers using phototransistors do not
have such as good a linear relationship
between the changes in light input and
output current as photodiode types
