CONDUCTANCE MOISTURE GAUGE

BY
M.ARUN KUMAR
BASIC PRINCIPLE

The Electrical Resistance (or Conductance)

of Non-Conducting Solids is Influenced By The Moisture Content
of The Sample And So By Measuring The Variation in Resistance
or Conductance The Moisture Level Can Be Obtained
TYPICAL EXAMPLE FOR MOISTURE MEASURING CELL
CONSTRUCTION AND WORKING

 In this Method The Sample is Granuled And Kept In a Insulated

Container with Two Electrode Cups And a Piston
 This Conductance Method Uses DC Voltages Up to 100v Or More For
Measurement Due To High Resistivity Of Sample
 Contact Between The Sample And Electrode Pair Might Wrong
Sometimes Due To Sample Structure So a optimum Pressure Is Given By
Piston and it is Maintained To Establish Good Contact
 Electrode Structure Is Different For Different Sample
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MOISTURE AND RESISTANCE

• The Moisture And

Resistance Are Inversely
Proportional
• The Resistance Drops
When Moisture is High
and When Moisture is
Low Resistance Is High
MOISTURE MEASURING USING PROBE TYPE
CONSTRUCTION AND WORKING

 This Method Is Normally Used For Moisture Measurement In Wood

Products
 The Electrode Consists Of Two To Six Sharp Headed Conductors Each
Embedded With Insulation Handle
 The Spear Leads Are Introduces or Inserted Inside The Sample And The
Conductivity Is Measured By Them
 The Wood Product having high Moisture Will Provide Different Output
Compared To Low Moisture Containing material
CONTINUOUS TYPE MOISTURE MEASUREMENT
CONSTRUCTION AND WORKING

 This Method The Electrode Consists of a Live Wire and a Dead Roller
 The Dead Roller Is a Grounded One
 The Dead Roller Act As one Of The Leg In Bridge Circuit And Varies
According To Sample Output
 The Dead roller Continuously Monitors The Sample That Roll Bellow it
And Produce Variation in Resistance Which Gives The Moisture Level
ADVANTAGE

 The Circuit is Simple And Easy To Construct

 Continuous Monitoring Can Be Done If Properly Connected
 Can Be Used Easily For Moisture Measurement In Solids
 It Can Be Used For A Long Time
DISADVANTAGE

 It Cannot Provide Accurate Result Every time

 It Needs Constant Calibration and Maintenance
 It is a Contact method Of Measurement And This May Cause Some Error
if Not In Contact Properly
 High Installation Cost
APPLICATIONS

 It is Used In Moisture Measurement Of Solid Elements

 It is Used In Moisture Measurement Of wood And Wood Products
 It is Also Used In Textile Industries For Moisture Measurement
 It is Typically Used To Measure Moisture Level In granular Solid
Particles and etc..
