Chapter 1: Lesson 2

 The study of the fundamental nature of


knowledge, reality, and existence, especially
when considered as an academic discipline.
 Philosophy means “Love of Wisdom” from the
greek word philosophia.
 A philosopher is someone who
practices philosophy. The term "philosopher"
comes from the Ancient Greek, φιλόσοφος
(philosophos), meaning "lover of wisdom".
 Wonder is the beginning for it stimulates us
to venture into philosophy.
 Our wondering here is directed toward
analogy and the relationship of things
 We are wondering about a more enduring
question.
 Philosophers are engaged in philosophy
because their goal is to be wise
 To be wise is to know the truth.
 Philosophy, therefore may be understood as
an activity in pursuit of wisdom –wisdom we
attribute to people who truly know.
 Theoretical – scientific knowledge, combined
with intuitive reason, of the things that are
highest by nature
 Practical – Practical wisdom is a true
characteristic that is bound up with action,
accompanied by reason, and concerned with
things good and bad for a human being.
