The process control system
design specification is a set of
documents that the control system
contractors use as reference for
detailed eng’g and configuration of
the system hardware and its
control logic software.
 Improved safety operational flexibility
 Improved quality  Reduced
 Improved yield maintenance cost
 Reduced manpower
 Increased
throughput
 Increased efficiency
 Improved accuracy
 Increased
 A set of documents should be prepared to
show the process flow and its
instrumentation and control diagram. This
set of documents provides a brief overview of
the process to be controlled including a list of
the major equipment w/ information no its
manufacturer, type, rating and size.
The major purpose of the site
description section is to provide
environmental conditions in each area
where equipment will be located.
Necessary information includes:
Location of job site.
Special seismic requirements
Temperature, humidity range and data
on airborne contaminants unusual
environmental characteristics that will
affect the control system:
- weather conditions
- process material(highly corrosive)
- vibration
- noise, acoustical
- noise, electrical
 Block diagram of the envisioned control
system should be provided which depicts all
major components and their locations (
operator consoles, control cabinets, terminal
cabinets, printers, etc.) w/ distance between
equipment locations noted. Defined in the
block diagram which items are to be supplied
by the project, which are supplied by others,
and which are existing.
 The I/O list is probably the single most
important section of the design specification,
particularly in terms of ensuring the
completeness of I/O modules and
communication devices. The I/O summary
must contain the following data on hardwired
I/O:
 Quantity of each signal type
 Voltage level, contact rating, & contact
arrangement for contact outputs
 Is the signal to be powered by the
control system(i.e., contact sensing
voltage or transmitter loop power)?
 Is the signal for control or monitoring
use?
 Where is the signal’s field wiring
terminated?
 If variable, control logic drawings should be
provided to indicate the level of complexity of
the logic to be implemented. A few “typical”
logic drawing are usually sufficient for this
purpose
 The process control units (CPU’s) encompass
the control system cabinets complete w/ all
electronic modules, termination units, power
supplies, mounting hardware, & cables
necessary to implement the I/O and logic
described in previous sections.
1.) SYSTEM CABINETS
2.) POWER SUPPLIES
3.) DATA HIGHWAY
4.) CONTROLLER MODULES
5.) INPUT/OUTPUT MODULES
6.)FIELD TERMINATIONS
7.) CABLES
 Next to the I/O list, the operator interface
section is most important in terms of
ensuring completeness of the system. The
following information must provided:
•Operator console layout drawing showing
desired console arrangement(horseshoe,
straight, etc.)
•Quantity of operator workstation
required
•Quantity of color and black and white
printers and printer tables.
•Quantity of devices for long term data
storage
•Quantity of operator chair
 smOking, fOOd alllOwEd?
 Air-conditioned or filtered?
 Humidity, static control available?
 What is the noise level desired/allowed?
 Process alarm messages
 Process event messages
 Control system error messages
 Control system diagnostic messages
 Plant overview
 Process schematic
 Process statistics
 Xy plots
 Trend display
 Strip chart
 From a graphical display, how do you change:
 Digital output change
 Set point value
 Daily plant summary  Optimizer result log
 Daily process summary  Batch summary
 Daily alarm summary
 Shift summary
 Laboratory report
 Utilities report
 Event history report
 Environmental report
 Product yield report
 Computer control log
 Describe any specific performance criteria
that the system must meet, if any. If
performance criteria are listed, they must be
easily measured and must relate only to the
performance of the control system and must
not be dependent on the performance of
devices external to the control system. One
commonly specified criteria is system
availability.
 Codes and standards should be referenced
only to the extent which they apply
specifically to the control system. A broad list
of inapplicable codes and standards is
meaningless and will only create confusion.
 A concise but thorough method of preparing a
control system design specification has been
presented. The importance of providing the
specification information detailed herein cannot be
overemphasized to produce truly useful design
reference document. It is suggested that this guide
de used as a checklist for every control system
design specification and evaluation to ensure that
the specification is easily interpreted, covers
important project requirements, and permits
selection of the best system to meet requirements.
