Company Background
● NTT Data - Started in 1967
● Part of NTT Group of Companies & provides IT infrastructure services
● Headquartered in Tokyo - Operational in 42 countries
● NTT Data India - Started in 1990s, caters to more than 1000 enterprises with
average annual revenue of $ 300 million and has a workforce of 12,500
applicants and data centre professionals
● Total 7 data centres in India with primary data centre in Bangalore and has
strategic partnership with leading firms like SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, HP, EMC
● Offers diverse portfolio of services like consulting, staffing, outsourcing, cloud
services, infrastructure, testing & business intelligence
● Deployed fleet of servers from various companies like IBM, Sun Microsystems
& other leading firms
Operational Transformation
● Initially, the fleet of servers (from IBM, Sun Microsystems) were used for
offshore software development, to support critical enterprise applications and
in-house tools and for product demonstration to customers
● Later, started using high-end desktops which could act as servers
● Adopting VMware vSphere 3.5 technologies (VMware - Subsidiary of Dell
Technologies) in order to shift towards server virtualization
● Adding another product of EMC Corporation, which was leader in IT storage
hardware solutions for data backup and recovery
● Finally, adopting VMware vCloud suite (cloud service version of VMware), to
automate the process of providing virtualization
Challenges Faced by NTT Data
● Servers (from IBM, Sun Microsystems)-

(i) Power issues, cooling & real estate costs.

(ii) Tedious and expensive procurement process

● Desktop Servers-

(i) High organizational costs

(ii) Overcrowded rack of servers, consuming high power & generating lot of
heat

● VMware vSphere 3.5 technologies-

(i) Constraint on resources of physical servers which acts as host

(ii) Slow down applications and server performance
How Virtualization helped

● NTT was struggling with power issues, cooling and real-estate costs. Whenever a team at
NTT required a new application server,a process of procurement was carried out which
was bpth tedious and expensive.
● NTT started procuring high end Desktops which could act as servers, but the problem was
each desktop could only be utilized to a single project due to capacity constraints .
● Dell, then offered server virtualization on two or three of its servers at NTT through
VMware.
● NTT DATA initially virtualized only two of the three servers of DELL.However this puts
constraint on resources of the physical server which acts as the host.
● EMC Corporation then deployed an entry level storage to create the required additional
capacity .
● NTT was therefore able to reduce real estate investments and reduce the no of server
rooms from four to just one rack.
Need for Implementing Cloud Virtualization
at NTT Data

● With 300 high end desktops as servers, each desktop being dedicated to
a single project, added to organisational costs as well as left an
environmental footprint.
● Overcrowded rack of servers that consumed tremendous power and
generated a lot of heat.
● With every additional project - the performance of the physical server
depreciates.
● Therefore NTT was struggling with power issues, coding and real estate
costs.
Future of Cloud Virtualization

● Reduced real estate investments by a significant amount.

● Completed automated the process of server virtualization and data
storage.
● Reduced pressure and better maintenance of rack of servers working in
sync through hybrid cloud based applications.
● Opens a potential of numerous additional applications for the clients.
● More effective and stronger data storage and recovery options.
● Incase of unavoidable circumstances (e.g. earthquake in japan), NTT was
able to easily transfer the data it holds to other no prone area centers.
Evaluation of Cloud Virtualization

● NTT went through a comprehensive evaluation before expanding the

application to its consumers, it took as long as 4 months.
● Through Trend analysis, they compared their past performance with the
new technology in terms of past, present and future expected usage,
also through these, they could understand any additional future
requirements.
● Noted all the IT related costs on a private cloud for conventional as well
as modern applications.
● They initially tested it for non-critical applications and going forward,
embraced the same for all of their applications.
