INTRODUCTION
 A world war is a large-scale war which affects the
whole world directly or indirectly.
 World wars span, multiple countries on multiple
continents or just two countries, with battles fought in
many areas in which many important military events
occurs.
INTRODUCTION
 While a variety of global conflicts have been
subjectively deemed “world wars” such as cold war and
war on terror, the term is widely and usually accepted
when it is applied to two major international conflicts
that occurred during the 20th century : world war I
(1914-18) and world war II (1939-45).
WORLD WAR II SUMMARY
( JAPAN ROLE)
 THE PACIFIC THEATER( PEARL HARBOR):- The
war in the pacific began on December 7,1941, when war
planes from Japan launched a surprise attack on the us
navy base at pearl harbor Hawaii.
 By this time Japan had already been at war with china
for several years and had seized the Chinese territory
of Manchuria.

 After the pearl harbor attack Japan began a massive
campaign of expansion throughout the south east Asia
– pacific region.
 Finally in august 1945, the united states dropped two
atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and
Nakasaki. Stunned by the unexpected devastation,
Japan surrendered a few days later.
POST WAR JAPAN
 After world war II had ended, Japan was devasted. All
the large cities , the industries and the transportation
networks were severely damaged.
 A severe shortage of food continued for several years.
 The occupation of Japan by the allied powers started in
august 1945 and ended in April 1952.

 General MacArthur was its first supreme commander.
The whole operation was mainly carried out by the US.
 Japan basically lost all the territory acquired after 1894.
in addition, the Kurile islands were occupied by the
soviet union and the Ryukyu island was controlled by
USA.

 The remains of Japan’s war machine were destroyed
and war crime trials were held.
 Over 500 military officers committed suicide right
after Japan surrendered.
 A new constitution went into effect in 1947 Japan was
also forbidden to ever lead a war again or maintain an
army.

 with the peace treaty that went into the effect in 1952,
the occupation ended. Japan’s self defense force was
established in 1954 accompanied by larger public
demonstrations.
 After the Korean war and accelerated by it, the
recovery of Japan’s economy flourished.
 Japan’s relations to the soviet union were normalized
in 1956, the ones to china in 1972.

 The economic growth resulted in a quick risk of living
standards, changes in society and stabilization of the
ruling position of the LDP.
 The 1973 oil crisis shocked the Japanese economy
which was heavily depended on oil. The reaction was a
shift to high technology industries.

(i) RECONSTRUCTION OF JAPAN:- Japan accepted
terms of the potsdam declaration on 15th august 1945,
that ended pacific war. Japan then was placed under
the occupation of allied powers, led by UNITED
STATES.
thereafter the general headquarters, supreme
commander for the allied powers issued directives to
the Japanese government, implementing various
reforms based on the major policies of
demilitarization and democratization.

(ii) OCCUPATION OF JAPAN:- General Douglas was
assigned the job of rebuilding and reforming post war
Japan. General Douglas MacArthur directed prime
minister YOSIDA Shigeru to establish a national police
reserve after the outbreak of Korean war in 1950.
important changes made Japan less aggressive and
unable to build an army. Japan’s colonies were taken
away. Japan also renounced use of nuclear weapons
and waging war.

WORKING WOMEN IN JAPAN
 In Sept 1951, the san Fransisco peace treaty was
concluded, along with the US- Japan security treaty.
 With US occupation of Japan after the war women
were given more rights.
 Women priority to family was a changed to the
individual
 Equal pay for equal work
 Women worked as part of war effort.
