Introduction

• The number of people who are elder and living alone in the world has been
increasing continuously in western countries .
• Different problems occur with the elderly people and one of them is falling.
Fall is the most common issue among the elderly people of age ≥ 65. Falls are
commonly defined as “inadvertently coming to rest on the ground, floor or
other lower level, excluding intentional change in position to rest in furniture,
wall or other objects” .
• One-third of the people who are over 65 years old have an average one fall
per year, two-third of them have a risk of falling again , and this number
increases with age. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report
, falls are the second leading cause of unintentional or accidental death
• One bad fall can mean a long hospital stay, permanent disability, painful
rehabilitation, a loss of independent life, or worse. For over two decades, the
experts from both technological and medical fields are working on reducing
the consequences of fall by reducing the response time and providing better
treatment upon occurrence of a fall.

Project Title Goes here 3

Problem Statement
• To detect Human Fall using Wearable Sensor Device &
Sensor based Mobile Application for security and
optimization .

4
Aim and Objectives of the Project
• The aim of this project is…
Development of automated, reliable, and prompt fall detection and
health monitoring systems is vital to guarantee immediate assistance
in case of falls, especially those involving long lies, and minimize
severe health complications.
• Project objectives :
– To detect the accident fall of people/elderly people.
– To provide accident fall location.
– To provide immediate assistance in case of any injury
– It helps reducing false alarms while maintaining low computation
cost on average, resulting in lesser power consumption.

5
Introduction
• Falls in older adults are common occurrence ,studies shows that
28-34 % of older adults have at least one fall in a year. Fall is
second biggest cause of accidental death for 87 % and above of
older adult.
• To detect fall three main techniques like Mobile Application
Sensors, Wearable Sensor based & computer vision/application –
based techniques are used.
• We are combining two techniques i.e. Mobile Application
Sensors &Wearable Sensor based; and are developing a single
system .

Algorithms
• The haversine formula determines the great-circle distance between two points on a sphere given
their longitudes and latitudes. Important in navigation, it is a special case of a more general formula in spherical
trigonometry, the law of haversines, that relates the sides and angles of spherical triangles.
• These names follow from the fact that they are customarily written in terms of the haversine function, given
by haversin(θ) = sin 2 (θ/2). The formulas could equally be written in terms of any multiple of the haversine, such
as the older versine function (twice the haversine). Prior to the advent of computers, the elimination of division
and multiplication by factors of two proved convenient enough that tables of haversine values
and logarithms were included in 19th and early 20th century navigation and trigonometric texts.
• Formulation
Let the central angle Θ between any two points on a sphere be:
where:
d is the distance between the two points (along a great circle of the sphere; see spherical distance),
r is the radius of the sphere.
The haversine formula hav of Θ is given by:
where
• φ 1 , φ 2 : latitude of point 1 and latitude of point 2,
• λ 1 , λ 2 : longitude of point 1 and longitude of point 2.

10
Advantages
•Provide Independence: As older people are not independent due to their age,
so they can fall, therefore by using fall detection they can have this comfort can
live independent alone in home and surrounding.

•Alarm Alert: Using Sensors, by Fetching values, system can give an alert if
there is fall. An alert message will also be send to the suggested person given
by user.

11
Disadvantages

•The major limitation of the described method is the need hardware

setup fall to be in view of the sensor.

•Another limitation is about the cost.

•It doesn't work in water.

12
Future Scope

the application can be tested in normal routine usage involving the

elderly population. Such recorded data on the cloud storage will
serve very useful for further refinement of the algorithm.
Additionally, by using individual user data to train the MKL-SVM
classifier, a personalized user dependent fall detection system can
be anticipated, enabling us to compare the reduction in false
alarms. Lastly, in order to enhance the overall system performance,
another potential future work could be on the feature engineering
/ extraction part to find even better features

13
Conclusions
• To develop an Android-based & Wearable Sensor fall detection
and emergency Alert Application System which supports
multiple carrying locations and uses a simple user-friendly GUI
for better accessibility.

• The proposed two-step fall detection algorithms will achieve

excellent classification results on fall-like events. We are going
to build this mobile application that could play an important role
in Indian society as a whole.
