The document provides instructions for using a Labnet Micropipettor to precisely transfer liquid samples. The micropipettor is used to transfer microliter amounts of liquids for biotechnology experiments. Key parts of the micropipettor are identified, including the pushbutton, calibration knob, and digital display. Steps are outlined for adjusting the volume, attaching pipette tips, drawing and expelling liquids as needed for the experiment. Care is advised to avoid misuse that could impact measurement accuracy.

• Biotechnologists use a pipettor to transfer precise amounts of liquids from one container to another. • The measurements are in microliters 1 ml=1000 µl.
Use of the Labnet Micropipettor
Care of the Pipettor
• Misuse of the pipettor can
result in incorrect measurements affecting your investigation. • Do not drop the pipettor. • Do not adjust the volume to less than 2 µl.
Use of the Labnet Micropipettor
Parts of the Pipettor 1 1 2 6 3 • 1) yellow pushbutton 6 6
• 2) calibration knob 3
• 3) digital volume display
• 4) barrel 4 • 5) disposable pipette tip 4 • 6) tip ejector 5 5
Use of the Labnet Micropipettor
Volume Adjustment Step 1
• In the display window are
three vertical numbers. • The top number is tens µl (10.0). • The middle number is ones µl (02.0). • The bottom number tenths µl (00.9).
Use of the Labnet Micropipettor
Volume Adjustment Step 2 • Set the pipettor to the desired volume by turning the calibration knob until the volume display reads the desired numbers. • 7.5 µl would read from top to bottom in the display window: 0 - tens 7 - ones .5 - tenths
Use of the Labnet Micropipettor
Transferring Liquids Step 1
• Adjust the pipettor to the
desired volume. • Hold the pipettor so the display is facing the user and the thumb can easily depress the yellow pushbutton.
Use of the Labnet Micropipettor
Transferring Liquids Step 2
• Open the box of yellow
pipette tips supplied by the Office of Biotechnology. • Place the pipette cone (end) into one of the tips and press down firmly. • NEVER USE THE PIPETTOR WITHOUT A TIP! Use of the Labnet Micropipettor Transferring Liquids Step 3
• Lift the pipettor and
attached tip away from the tip box. • Depress the pushbutton to the first stop before placing the pipette tip in the liquid. • Place the tip in the liquid.
Use of the Labnet Micropipettor
Transferring Liquids Step 4
• Slowly release the
pushbutton and draw the liquid into the tip. • Remove the tip from the liquid and visually check for liquid in the tip.
Use of the Labnet Micropipettor
Transferring Liquids Step 5
• Place the tip into the
container which is to receive the liquid. • Slowly depress the pushbutton as far as it can go. • With the pushbutton fully depressed, withdraw the tip.
Use of the Labnet Micropipettor
Transferring Liquids Step 6
• Press down on the tip
ejector button to eject the tip. • Dispose of the tip in an appropriate container.
