CHRIS ARGYRIS LEARNING MODEL

Suggests that learning occurs under two conditions:

1. When an organization achieves what is intended

2. When a mismatch between intentions and outcomes is identified and
corrected

Single loop learning define the ‘governing variables’ ie; what they expect to
achieve in terms of targets and standards

Then they monitor and review achievements, and take corrective action as
necessary, thus completing the loop

Argyris believes that single loop learning is appropriate for routine, repetitive
process

Double loop learning occurs when the monitoring process initiates action to
redefine the ‘governing variable’ to meet the new situation, which may be
imposed by the external environment

The organization has learned something new about what has to be achieved in
the light of changed circumstances , and then decide how this should be achieved

This learning is converted into action

Argyris believes that double loop learning is more relevant for complex,
programmable issues
